ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - While praising the performance of the local financial services sector during the COVID-19 era, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has reminded those living in the Territory that the spirit of the Virigin Islands is one where there is harmony amongst cultures.

"I am grateful that our industry in the BVI is truly a representation of the spirit and cultures of all people 'scattered yet together' across the globe, living and working together," he said in a statement, yesterday, July 14, 2020.

Online xenophobia

The Premier's calls come as some sections of the VI community continue to use social media and other online avenues to display xeonphobic attitudes towards expatriates living and working in the Territory and even at those who may have been laid off or terminated from employment as result of COVID-19.

These attitudes have been compounded by recent announcements from Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), that foreign workers who have been terminated from their jobs and without employment should consider returning to their home country.

As part of the announcements, Hon Wheatley reminded; however, that the VI is still committed to the needs of foreign workers affected by the pandemic. "I intend to work diligently in keeping this Government’s commitment to our brothers and sisters of the wider Caribbean, mainland US, Europe, and other parts of the world," he said.

'Live in Unity' - Premier Fahie

Premier Fahie, as part of his speech, further said, "I urge you, therefore, to continue to live in unity and harmony," he said in relation to working towards the common goal of moving the Territory forward.

Turning his attention to the race conversation, Hon Fahie noted, "It behooves me to acknowledge that other pandemic that equally emerged, a phenomenon finally gripping the attention of nations across the globe following the senseless death of our brother, George Floyd."

Premier Fahie has in the past slammed racism and those seeking to practice it in the Territory. "I don’t want to see the BVI become like what I am seeing in America and in other areas of the world," he said as he called on those guilty to change their mindset.

Sir, if you want it to stop do something about the blogs. I am sick and tired of tuning in to the online news sites and approximately 80% of the blogs is with this " island people" overtones. How did we arrive at this sick demented stage of our lives? Our fathers left from here and went in to the neighboring USVI 'through the shoot' IOW 'illegally.' While it might only be a small number who are using these uncalled for slangs, IT NEED TO STOP.

We of the Virgin Islands act like we so pious, but God is high and He looks low. He will judge us individually and as a country. The dressing room is here and now. Those who continue to sit behind phone and computer screens spewing their evil venom and hatred don't think you could hide from God. You continue and see how far you reach with it. Just remember that time longer than twine. Shalom!

Read your bible before calling my name:
      * Ephesians 6:5, “Slaves obey your earthly masters with respect and fear and sincerity of heart, just as you would show to Christ.”
      * 1 Timothy 6:1, “All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their masters as fully worthy of honour, so that God’s name and our teaching will not be discredited.”

Mr Premier its just a very small insecure lazy few....Most of them parents from the Island any way...Dont give their hate any credibility.. . The kind of nasty hateful language really read and sounds bad...Im happy you address it... But dont worry yourself too much.... Ur most important task is the Economy and your plan for reopening the borders. Focus on those things....

@ Happy N Sad, although I may agree that the economy needs to be stimulated, we cannot be ignorant of the fact as to what is taking place around us, we are told that the US open up too early and it’s no secret about what is taking place there, they are having a serious spike in Covid 19 cases. St. Vincent & the Grenadines was Covid free for a while, the opened their boarders last Saturday and Bam, first flight, 6 new cases. We cannot be naive as to what is taking place, you are talking about opening boarders but the question is, to whom. We open up and the place stayed to flood with visitors, do we have the resources in place to deal with them? Covid is not going anywhere soon and we recognize that fully well, we also recognize that we cannot shut down for ever and at some point we have to open but let us approach it with caution, don’t rush the brush and give a dilapidated job, then we have to do it all over again, let’s just take our time and proceed with caution. Health is wealth, not money.

Then go you and others on a work permit did not build the BVI as you believe , the business owners who employed you did. Anyone could of done the job on the permit you chose to apply for the job on a work permit that was only for 1 year but expect to reside forever. These are the facts nothing to do with where you come from in the world the work permit only gives you a right to reside while in work to that employer.

Mr Premier if you don't want the BVI to become like the USA get rid of that idea about giving the police all those powers
while executing a warrant. Sounds to like they can come into your house and do what they want.

It not hatred against expats alone. There is not much left for the expat to throw at the locals. eg. inbreed, lazy, unqualified and much more. Nobody is adressing these things and what about when locals come home qualified for jobs and turned down and then those positions are given to expats who are no more qualified and experienced but because they may have more experience in sucking up or the hire-ing personel is an expat. There is unfairness on both sides but the difference is that the locals do not complain as much as the expats. When bad things are done to locals by expat they react by saying Island people go home. It is not in the BVIslander's DNA to roll over and play dead while being taken advantage of. There are those who like to do bad things to others and when others stand up for themselves they call out for God to strike them out. The world should be told the truth of what is going on in in this little territory. It is not about discrimination against expats it is about the locals saying to expats stop being greedy and bad minded.

When a country and its people have become outnumbered by expats with different moral and social values, crime increase and a marked degradation of quality of life, there will be resentment dislike and hatred for the offending party.
The Gov can alter this effectively only by making a conscious effort to do so. Rather ,there is a pandering for votes and popularity even if it means breaking and ignoring immigration laws. The VIslanders, now a minority, grieve for the loss while their precious VI becomes a pit of unrecognizable refuse.

@ Mrs. Tubman, you mentioned about outnumbered in the land of your birth, that may very well be true, but don’t blame the down island people as some of us referred to them or the expats, we are the ones to blame, we are the ones causing it, you know why, because when out fore parents left for the great beyond and leave something behind for us, what do we do, we squandered and sell, so who to blame, ourselves. Leave the expats and down island people alone.

The only reason some of these people are still seen as expats is because status takes so long to be given. If they were welcomed as equals, they would not be separately classified but be welcomed as citizens.

Seem like this xenophobic behavior became a lot more rampant since the election in my Opinion , also the recent decisions made by the labour minister clearly points to a mass exodus of expats the thing is alot of expats are patiently waiting for the airport to open up and have flights without charter and they will leave, the BVI shows no love and is slowly but surely going to get rid of most expats that are not working and they are right why be a burden on others and society i recently saw a black lives matter protest in the bvi what a joke you should dance ah yard before you dance abroad i just hope another Irma doesn't hit and you need aid from the same down islands you so hate and talk about each and everyday in the comment sections of these online platforms Mr Premier the BVI is not living in Unity and surely not Harmony thats a pipe dream Open your eyes before this toxic behavior ruins Natures Little Secret
