ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1), has told Caribbean Heads of Government and Ministers of Finance that COVID-19 is placing significant pressure on the Virgin Islands economy as the Territory combats the spread of the coronavirus.

According to a press release from the Department of Information and Public Relations, Premier Fahie’s remarks were part of a prepared statement made at a virtual meeting of Caribbean Finance Ministers on the impact of COVID-19 hosted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) on April 28, 2020.

Impact of COVID-19

Among other things, the Premier updated the gathering on the health and social impact of COVID-19 on the Virgin Islands and the initial response by the Government. He also stressed the importance of grants, soft loans and concessional financing for the countries affected by the global pandemic that are also preparing for the coming hurricane season.

The Premier thanked ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Isabel Adriana Bárcena Ibarra and the agency’s Caribbean Sub-regional Headquarters in Port of Spain, Trinidad for their continued support to the Virgin Islands and other Associate Member Countries (AMCs) of ECLAC in their pursuit of sustainable development.

Awareness & support

In an interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations, Premier Fahie said the meeting was an important opportunity for Caribbean Leaders to make the international community aware of the economic, fiscal, social and health challenges the region is facing as a result of COVID-19 and the support they need to get through this crisis and recover from it.

Premier Fahie said, “In the BVI we understand all too well the difficulties of trying to recover from a catastrophic event without the needed financial resources, as we have had to do since 2017 after hurricanes Irma and Maria. I encourage our region’s international partners to be as supportive as possible as we face this new global challenge together.”

The Premier was accompanied by Financial Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Mr Glenroy A. Forbes, Deputy Secretary in the Premier’s Office, Mrs Eliva Smith-Maduro and Special Envoy of the Premier, Mr E. Benito Wheatley.

Eastern Caribbean Development bank Governor made a speech in St Kitts...Try listen to it..." i really think We have to find a safe way to live amongst this virus... Health must be paramount...we have to take it seriously, its our responsibility...However, We cant shut down forever...Living is a risk, You leave your home no guarantee u r going to get back home.. U go to sleep no guarantee you going to wake up... We go out in faith.. We go to bed in faith . U in your house it starts shaking Earth quake u in fear u cant stop it, then ur faith step in telling u its going to be ok......life .....success ... progress .. We approach with faith....No need to abandont our faith now. Living is all about risk.. No one knows the Future... The Financial, economical and social strength of the Caribbean are in its people and government living and working together..Free movement is an integral part... .Going forward, the opportunities are going to be greater ..But we have to be smarter.. We have to work smarter, be kinder to each other, especially our customers....Lesson learnt...People have to start saving no matter how little it is, put it away for that rainy day.. Cut back on something we dont need and save that money weekly..It will coming handy.... Hurricane season is around the corner.. Pray none is serious..But we are expected to prepare..People abroad have to allow to come to their country especially those with properties, its their responsibility to prepare...they have to be given that chance to do so....

Brain storming the other day while watching some news on covid19, all that is going on with that, the horrors of it as well and the quest to find a solution to solve it.
It dawned on me that COVID19 could be [Certificate Of Vaccine #19.]. Just my considered opinion.
