DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Petitioning the House to ask questions after key statements on COVID-19, Third District Representative in the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly, Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) has asked for Government to consider adding nail salons to the list of approved businesses as part of the phased opening after the COVID-19 lockdown.

Hon Fraser asked for the request to be considered when the Seventh Sitting of the Second Session of the Fourth HoA began today, April 16, 2020, at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duffs Bottom, Tortola.

Barbershop & salons to be opened

According to Hon Fraser, “The opening of hair salons, and not taking into consideration nail salons, is some form of a dichotomy because some hair salons have the nail salons inclusive and it puts the guy who has a nail salon as a separate entity at a disadvantage in this period.”

Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) last evening April 15, 2020, in an update to the Territory, had announced that hair salons, and by extension barbers, will be allowed to open from April 19, 2020, as part of the list of approved businesses but they must also adhere to social distancing guidelines.

“Ladies, it is now approved that next week you can go and get your hair done. Adhere to the social distancing measures,” he said today, April 16, 2020, noting that several complaints had been made for the services to be approved for opening.

He explained that the omission from his COVID-19 updated statement yesterday, April 15, 2020, was an error on his part and that the opening was approved by Cabinet.

"After l left, I got no less than 120 Whatsapp from ladies who wanted to know, and sent their pictures to show me how their hair is looking, stating if I think that I can get away with this," Hon Fahie said, adding that he is thinking of launching a 'before and after' Facebook competition with the troves of photos received on the matter.

Hair & nails complimentary

Hon Fraser illustrated; however, that hair and nails are complimentary and that one must always go with the other.

“I dare say, Mr Speaker, that every man, whether he met his lady in the church or on the dance floor, has come to know her now today as the lady that he met there and that lady was wearing weaves and nail extensions, so let’s not make this matter any more complicated for the males,” he noted.

Hon Fahie said that for now, he cannot preempt Cabinet decisions to include nail salons but will move to review the list of approved business to update it for nail salons, inclusive of the financial services sectors and other services to ensure continued revenue generation for the Territory.

When we were growing up, we did our own hair, and money was used for food and clothing and other essential things. Beauty parlors were never a bill our parents had to pay. If I were a landlord and I am giving you a break on your rent, and saw you walk up straight from the beauty parlor getting your fake hair, fake eyebrows, fake nails, fake face pancake makeup on, freshly done, you would pay me or be put out when this is all over. You silly people have your priorities in the wrong place. Feed your children and pay your bills! Beauty parlors are a breeding ground to spread this virus and you want the Government to allow this?......Foolishness!

Maybe they should take this time to at least try and do some of the styles that they pay the hairdressers to do. It's not like there's anywhere extravagant to go at this point in time. Sit in front of your mirror and take your time and just try. They might actually surprise themselves and uncover some skills they never thought they had. Practice makes perfect. If they keep at it they will actually master some of those skills.

I cannot believe Fraser would come on here with this stupid nonsense! Hair salons and barber shops are the most dangerous at this time. Workers are on top of you touching your hair, face, neck etc. There is no distancing at all. If one person is infected and then those around them now go home and about, THIS WOULD SURELY START START A DOMINO EFFECT. What is wrong with these stupid self centered people who do not know how to wash and take care of their own personal bodies? Fraser, I would not have expected you to come on here with this. So glad we have a Premier who has common sense and care for all of our safety. NONSENSE Fraser!!!

Surely our economy re opening should not exclude retailers either. It seems everything else but those are on the “ essential “ list. How more dangerous is a clothing or jewelery store to a bus and taxi ? It seems to me that less people are present in a jewelery shop versus a hair salon? Honestly one might as well at this stage let everyone re open ! Other wise resort to “ emergency essentials “. Hardware , Construction , bus and taxi , beauty Salon’s are no more important than the remaining retailers excluded from this list. I say review “ What essential and emergency Means truly. .. or else release all !

Why they don't take their backsides and go do what they know to do from young. They don't have work to go to so drop in some single plaits or cornrows. You are at home. Who cares how you look!! So accustomed to going to the blasted salon that they forget how to groom themselves AND their girl children. Just like they the parents, their girl child hairline meeting the crown of their heads. Skin back and now in the distance (disappeared). They're now afraid of how their men will react when they see the real skinheads. lol lol, such shame and pity. Why not remove the braids and weaves at home, wash your hair and let the light of day shine on your crown so it can grow. Some of them wear those braids and weaves so long that when they stand next to you, you smell them how they funky. You have to wonder if their noses not working. Come on ladies, how about revisiting your roots. How hard can it be? While you're at it teach the little ones how to groom and take care of their hair and themselves amongst other things.
Mr. Premier I'm appalled that you are allowing this even. There will be no social distancing going on when the salons open. Some of them squeeze in the extra chairs just to make the change. Plus, I can't wait to read of the fights to get inside. Who was first and who went where to come back and blah. It just doesn't make any sense one bit. This is even less than important. This should not be an issue at alll. How can social distancing happen if you are getting your nails done? Sigh. Just what's going through your head as you read this is what's going through mine as well. But how efficient will it be. Won't you be worried still that you might just be taking home something to your families? It's a possibility aint it, but just to "look good" you going to take that dumB risk. The places where you think is least expected to contract COVID-19 is the place highly favored. The BVI now has one case and before we be grateful we talking shiite bout open salons/barber shops and nail parlors. My people stop wearing your smarts on your sleeves and exhibit it in the correct manner. Let us do the needful and keep the BVI COVID free. When shit escalates the SAME Andrew ayo going talk shiite about. He dis and he dat.
Mr. Fahie, I know YOU know the adage PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE and many more in its bracket. PLEASE apply them and don't let these moomoo women overrule a good thing. If they stay indoors and comb their hair like they were taught we will be curfew free soonest.
Women, go wash your nasty hair and stop being lazy. Let your men/husbands see the real you or keep on the just as funky bonnets they've become accustomed to.

Pound me. I AM a Woman. My back broad but the truth is the truth aaaaand what.

I do understand the social distancing aspect of everything. And respect the curfew and the current social context in which we must live and abide by at this time. But I believe those of us who exercise, find enlightenment and spirituality in the ocean and not on the beach should be allowed to enter the water...Ride the waves and surf as long as we mind the current government requests in regards to time of day...Our brothers in Jamaica can surf, though the beaches are closed. Perhaps this might be a point for consideration, as the season for waves will be ending very soon till the fall. Gods Blessings to all.

@ musa...That's right! China is kicking out all of the African people from residences and hotels and making them sleep on the streets, then deporting them. China want to treat us a though we brought the virus there, then Africans should never ever support their economy by buying their goods. Why can't we all stick together for once? We have the upper hand on China right now. Why do we always allow others to treat us like dirt and then we give them our money so they become rich? How STUPID are we? Damn, I'm sick of this.

There are other businesses that don't have the same issues concerning social distancing and they are not allowed to work... why?

The same ones who want to get to the salons are the same ones that will be looking for assistance.

Salons are high risk in the spread of COVID 19. Difficult to social distance. Added to that some don't clean/ disinfect brushes and combs and try to use the same dirty tools on everyone. A few get offended when you tell them about it. Not taking that risk , once the hair store is open I will continue to do what I can do with my hair.

According to nurses in the uk nails can spread the deadly corona virus. With this new cases of corona in the territory I feel it would be taking a risk to go to any nail salon, we don’t know if the lady travelled out of the territory within the last two months and if she didn’t we have a bigger problem on our hands because where or who did she contract the virus from. Prevention is better than cure.

Why would the Premier allow a bunch of women to run that on him. Hair salon breathe germs, when I was going to the salon, I would take my own comb and blow out brush, when I went to have a manicure and pedicure I would take my own cuticle trimmer. At this time, there is no way I am going to any hair salon. There is not enough distance space. Absolutely not.

Women back in the days didn't had many salon options but they managed and looked 1000 times better than these of today! Also you women need to be focusing on your homes and children if you have any. Please be careful of these decisions you will make and how it will affect your life after!

At this time women and men should be praying more and reflecting on their lives and making it right with the Lord! Am just saying!!! OneBVI OneLove I love the BVI as my own home!! This is a Bless Nation!!!

These bvi women is something else
    No pun Intended
But I was shocked to c soo many of them
    Can’t wash their own hair
Even touch up their roots with relaxers at home.
    Cornrows a no no
They can’t even comb their kids everything is salon .

My big question after Irma there was no salons most lost their business place homes etc .

    Survival was of paramount importance.
I saw men here big and small with hair covering their faces.

Ppl driving with theirs glass missing in vehicle .

Hair and nails was the least of anybody problem.

    Electricity food place of abode
Now they coming with their BS.

    Accept what God give u
Give ur head a break from all those wig weave and now lace front wigs braids
I do understand relaxers which can be bought in supermarkets n done home instructions at the box very simple a child can even do it.

    Ppl are dying worldwide
    This virus threatening mankind
Stop ur foolishness hair n nails Can’t save u.

The premier let me down on this one,Where is the social distancing with a person on you doing your hair?
Are the combs etc sanitized ?
This is community spreading waiting to happen in this small territory.
    Mr Fahie,please rethink this one.
If persons reconsider and refuse to patronize these places, they will close and save lives in the process.

So 120 women bombard the Premier about opening salons.
How about putting that same energy in pushing for tightened laws against pedophiles, abusers, working on self development, improving marriages relationships. Not saying looking good is not important but we cannot be a slave to hair in times of crises.

Are you freaking kidding me!!!!! Beauty parlors are harbingers of germs!!!! Everyone is in your face, hair, holding hands to do manicures and pedicures for your feet.....UGGGGGGGGH! Our Premier has been doing such an excellent job keeping us safe, why would he even entertain listening to Fraser or anyone, who will throw away all of the preventive measures he has put in place. STUPIDITY IS GOING TO GET US ALL KILLED!

Premier, you and your colleagues have done well in protecting the territory from the Covid19 pandemic so far by instituting social distancing and the lockdown. So please don't even consider this madness being pressed upon you to include these types of close contact businesses in early reopenings, the result of which might well be to undo the success achieved so far in mitigating the spread of the virus.Walk back consideration of this hair and nails craziness at this time.

BIG mistake! Where is the 6 ft social distancing that our officials are asking us to adhere to?

Sounds like another Samson and Delilah story to me. Or like the serpent, 'It was the woman .....'. Vanity, all vanity.

Need I say more? Hope that this decision does not come back and bite us hard where it hurts the most.
