ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Childhood storybook characters came alive today October 30, 2015 when the Early Childhood Unit of the Department of Education hosted the second “Stories on Parade” and “Stories through Drama” to promote literacy for young children.

The event is also held as an extension of Reading is Fun Week and featured a number of pre-schools participating in the parade also making presentations during a drama session at the Central Administration Complex.

To the pulsating sounds of a drum corps, the young children who had been assembled at the Festival Grounds made their way under police escorts along Water Front Drive to the Central Administration Complex where they relaxed for a few minutes before regrouping and getting on stage to further bring some if their storybook characters to life.

Some of the stories featured were The Three Little Pigs, Cat in the Hat, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Green Eggs and Ham and many others, including stories from the Bible.

"This morning we saw children who have developed a love for reading in the parade," said Chief Librarian of the Virgin Islands Public Library Suzanne S. Greenaway as she delivered a brief address.

"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body," she stressed to her young listeners. "When we read our minds are stomatal and we can see the people and places that are in the stories," she said.
