ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI: In a moving tribute that recognizes the passion and commitment of long serving Legislator and Fifth District Representative, Honourable Delores Christopher, the Virgin islands community have come together to mourn the death of a true daughter of the soil.

Honourable Christopher passed away on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, according to family sources and while the news came as a shock, many remembers the outspoken legislator as a true authority and fierce defender of the Virgin Islands.

Deep regret

The House of Assembly in its official statement via Speaker of the House Ms Ingrid A. Moses-Scatliffe, said that with deep regret they announce the passing of Honourable Delores Christopher, Member of the House of Assembly, Deputy Speaker and Representative for the 5th Electoral District.

Sixth District Representative Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines in her statement said, “Today the Territory lost one of the most valiant soldiers who fiercely defended our shores… Today a family lost a wife, mother, grandmother and more, who showed unconditional love and raised many around her to serve as she did.”

“I find comfort in her fight both in the House and out of it and know that the work she has done will continue to speak for her. As one of two women in the fight for our Territory, I know she would say, well Alvera I did my best and you are left to do the rest… It’s a charge I’ll graciously continue to do in honour of my beloved Delores.”

Ms Madure-Caines and Ms Chrostopher are said to have shared a special bond, “Today I lost a friend, a true friend and confidant, my beloved colleague and friend Delores Christopher, I miss her already… May she rest in peace and may her family find comfort in knowing that, ‘The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged - Deuteronomy 31:8’,” Madure-Caines said.

Committed Public official

Governor of the Virgin Islands His Excellency Augustus J. U. Jaspert said in his official statement, “I am sad to learn of the passing of Honourable Delores Christopher, a committed public official who has served the people of the Fifth Electoral District, and this Territory with great pride.”

“She was a champion of this Territory throughout her life. I know that she was always very passionate about the preservation of the Virgin Islands culture and youth development… In my brief time here, it has been an honour to know and work with her. Her voice will certainly be missed from this community” he said.

 “I pray that God strengthens the family and the people of this Territory during this most difficult time,” the Governor said in closing.

Outpouring on VINO blogs

Meanwhile, on the blogs of this online publication, readers also shared deep sentiments at the passing of Ms Christopher.

Sandra Phillip Hodge said, “This is very sad news... another blow to the territory. May her soul rest in eternal peace. My sympathy to her family and colleagues. She will be remembered as courageous and sincere.”

“Shocking news...so sad to hear Hon Christopher has departed this world. Condolences to Bob, Troy, Art and Najan. Take comfort in the legacy she left you. She will be missed. RIP dear lady,” said Mina Jaigopaul.

On anonymous blogger said, “I remember meeting her the very first time 3 years ago... As a young person, she was always so warm and inviting. Every time I saw her, she stopped and spoke to me. Offered advice so many times. Stay strong Art…. It's not easy I know and these words cannot suffice but please stay strong.”

 “A lady with passion and compassion. A true Virgin Islander to the core, who will truly be missed. I extend deepest condolences to her family,” said another.
