NORMAN ISLAND, VI- Virgin Islands News Online was just informed by our Team of Reporters on Norman Island that a powerboat was destroyed by fire in the harbour of the private island this afternoon, April 4, 2015.

According to reports, the powerboat was seen on fire following an explosion and the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services (VIF&RS), along with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), was summoned.

According to bartender at Pirates Bight Restaurant and Bar on Norman Island Junior Williams, the fire started sometime around 5:30pm.

"I was at the bar when there was a loud explosion in a powerboat that was at the beach and then I noticed fire and smoke coming from the centre console of the boat."

Williams further said that at least three persons were in the boat at the time of the explosion but evacuated quickly to escape injuries.

"There was another boat, also from Puerto Rico, that tried to pull the boat away from the beach and tried to get the fire out but had to abandoned efforts as the fire blazed."

According to Williams, he and another person went to the assistance with a fire extinguisher but could not put out the fire completely.

The incident was confirmed by Chief Fire Officer Mr Zebalon A. McLean who said he was awaiting a full report from his team dispatched to Norman Island but was in a position to say that he received reports that a boat was on fire at Norman Island and that it was burning for some time.

He added that his men and officers of the RVIPF were trying to put out the blaze.

Virgin Islands News Online will bring you more details as they come in.

Dang. A boat being destroyed is no doubt an upsetting matter. Owning a boat is an expensive labour of love. "Condolences" to the owner.
