Power will change hands on Nov. 7 – Skelton-Cline declares
At the NDP’s rally on Saturday October 22, 2011 in Cane Garden Bay, Pastor Cline said he is not running against anybody but he is running for a better future for the Virgin Islands.
Stating that the Territory is in need of visionary leadership, Cline said immediately upon taking office, he will commence fixing some of the “simple things” that should have been done a long time ago. Starting from Jost van Dyke, Cline said he will begin fixing the roads that goes to the eastern end of the island, reconfigure the proposed Multi-purpose centre on the island to accommodate the primary school and immediately purchase a generator for the Immigration and Customs office.
The 2nd district candidate said the culverts will be taken out of the ghut in Ballast Bay and a bridge will be put across the ghut to reduce the constant flooding in the area.
Cline said he will sit with the recently established Brewers Bay Development Association to come up with a development plan for Brewers Bay and he will return to his Government, “command and demand” that they begin work in areas that were left behind for so long.
He also reminded 2nd district residents of his plans to put a basketball court at the Enis Adams Primary School to accommodate the school during the day and the young men of the Harrigan community during the afternoons and evenings.
Furthermore, he proposed that during his first month in office, he wants to form a business and trade association for all the business men and women in the second district where “they will set their own polices, they will chose their own offices, they will set their own rules so when I bring the bacon back it is them and not me who will decide how the bacon is shared among the people of the second district”.
For Cane Garden Bay, the NDP candidate revealed that steps will be put in place to help restore the Callwoods Rum Distillery which will serve as a tourists’ attraction and to also preserve its legacy.
Fixing of the road down to Cane Garden Bay will also be among the priorities for Cline, along with the completion of work on the Cane Garden Bay cemetery.
New location for IDPS or sewerage systemSpeaking of the long standing sewerage overflow concern that affects the Ivan Dawson Primary School, Cline said either the sewerage system will have to be relocated which is currently behind the school or the school will have to be moved.
He reminded supporters that every time it rains heavily; the sewerage overflows, affecting the school's operations and sanitation. He further reminded residents that the system which was put down there 13 years ago was put in “the wrong place and the wrong system” since the sewerage line also runs several feet into the sea and onto the coral reefs which have suffered severe damage.
Eating fish that eat human wasteTo the surprise of some, Cline asked if they knew they were eating fish that was eating raw human waste.
“… human waste is the nastiest thing in the planet and we eating fish that eating raw human waste. Where we are trying to live healthy by eating fish, sometimes chicken, but we are eating our own mess. I am asking you do you want to change,” he asked residents, stating that he would immediately upon taking office, formulate the legislation that has been sitting in Conservation and Fisheries Department, to put infrastructure in place for pump-out stations.
Speaking of the urgent need to protect the beach and its environs, particularly in Cane Garden Bay, Cline recalled that the Government has been asked for $175,000 for the Water Shed Restoration project for Cane Garden Bay which will seek to re-mediate the current situation where debris get into the sea. However, he said as of October 22, they have not received even $175.
Meanwhile, Cline pledged that he will hold meetings in the district every three months once elected to office to report to the people.
Cline said it does not really take a visionary to do things for the people but just somebody who cares enough to go “to the tables of decisions to fight on your behalf”.
