Potter off to solid season start for Lady Royals

ROAD TOWN, Tortola VI – Virgin Islander Jelissa “Shelly” Potter went two from four with two runs scored as the Warner University Lady Royals split a double header with Grand View University, Iowa on Saturday March 22, 2014.

One day after their first road trip of the season, Warner University softball team returned to Daly Field for a pair of games with Bluefield College (Va.) and William Penn University (Iowa) last Wednesday afternoon March 19, 2014.

In game one against Bluefield, the Lady Royals pounded out 16 hits and run-ruled the Lady Rams 11-3 in five innings. In game two against William Penn, the third and fourth innings were big for the Lady Royals as they poured on seven more runs for a 10-3 lead. In the fifth inning Nicole Dowdy doubled to left center scoring Jelissa Potter ending the game due to run-rule 11-3.

At the plate Stefani Bonilla led the team going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Five other Lady Royals collected two hits including Jelissa Potter who also scored two runs.

In their second game versus William Penn, the Lady Royals scored three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to steal a 7-6 win.

Jelissa Potter and Jessica Castiglione both went 3-for-4 in the game. Potter scored three runs while Castiglione drove in a pair of runs.

In the circle, Nicolette Wunderly came on in relief of starter Lindsey Martin in the third inning and pitched the final 5.2 innings earning her first victory of the season (1-0). Wunderly allowed one run on eight hits in her relief stint.

In only their second road trip of the season, Warner University softball team split their doubleheader with Eckerd College. The NCAA-II Tritons won game one 7-2 but the Lady Royals came back with a win in game two, 2-0 in eight innings.

Potter went 1 for 3 scoring on a wild pitch in game one and added a stolen base in game 2.
