ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - A man is scheduled to appear in court today after being charged by Police with the offence of incest.

The charge stems from an act allegedly committed by a man on his stepdaughter while she was a minor in his home.

The Child Abuse Protocol now in place prohibits the publication of the name of either the victim or, in this case, the accused at any point.

Isn't incest when the persons are related by blood?

'Incest' is typically defined as sexual intercourse between two persons commonly regarded as too closely related to marry or forbidden by custom, whether on account of consanguinity (related by blood) or on account of affinity (having a kindred relationship not necessarily by blood).

Our Criminal Code regards incest as a criminal offence under the section relating to sexual offences. Incest can be committed by a man, as well as by a woman.

To answer your query specifically, incest by a man includes sexual relations with a woman (female) whom he knows to be his granddaughter, daughter, stepdaughter, sister or mother.
