DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- As momentum continues to build for the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League slated to bounce off on August 15, 2015 its popular draft system will return as all players from last year are expected to be back in the pool.

Last year, for the first time in Virgin Islands’ basketball history the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League set up a draft system whereby any player in the Virgin Islands, who was considered an ‘Elite’ basketball player, was given the opportunity to play in the League through a draft system.

For the 2014 League, some 15 ‘A’  League players were drafted and now for the 2015 Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed League, they must all return to an open pool to be redrafted, once they are 24 years and older.

Elite players who are 23 and under do not have to participate in the draft but can join any team.

Rules of Draft

A raffle pick will determine which team gets which number picked in the draft. Only drafted players can be traded; however, trading of players is up to the League Committee.

Teams with the lowest record/score in the 2014 League will get numbers 1, 2, & 3 in order to have first preference to pick in the Draft System to display fairness.

Participating in the Draft system is not compulsory; however, it is highly recommended so that each team is allowed a fair and equal opportunity in the League.

Elite players for the Draft System should be well disciplined, and cannot be suspended from any other local Basketball League.

Names of possible draft players

The Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League considers Elite or A players to be persons such as Jason A. Edwin, Kennedy H. Bass, Ray D. Victor, Randy ‘Chino’ George, Cedric King, David ‘Bolo’ Lettsome, Steve E. Parillon, Travis A. Isaac, Kelvin Samuel, Phillip Glasgow, Javaghn Cameron, Juan Hatchet, Eustace ‘Boss’ Freeman, Trevon ‘Reese’ Lewis, Jamal ‘Trigger’ Rabsatt, and Dwayne ‘Kobo’ Penn to name a few.

According to League Commissioner Rajah A. Smith, the draft system is a good one that will ensure the league remains competitive, which is what fans want.

“Just for the record, the draft went great last year but we are also trying to do multi-year rosters in order to help teams to develop and prevent teams from trying to take players from other teams just to win championship rings.

“So we want to maintain the competitive level of games that we have there so that the fans can appreciate the games even more.”

Smith said he himself is a big basketball fan and never likes to see lopsided affairs.

“So we decided to go back to the draft as part of that structure to continue to try to make the teams balanced and competitive.”

Registration continues

The Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League is still accepting registration as the deadline for both junior and senior divisions is July 1, 2015. Teams can consist of both males and females.

The League will start on Saturday August 15, 2015 with an opening and trophy giving ceremony. It will include the unveiling of a championship banner and awarding of rings to the 2014 Championship Team, Bayside Blazers.

For the 2015 registration, teams can contact the League’s Commissioner Mr Rajah A. Smith at 340-1546 or the Assistant Commissioner Byron J. ‘Chucky’ Hodge at 542-8300.

Registration fee is $200.00 which includes uniform tops and insurance for all personnel participating in the Hon. Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League.

Rings will be awarded again for the 2015 Championship sponsored by Digicel (BVI) Limited.

The founders of the League are Hon Julian Fraser RA, Representative of the Third District and Bishop John I. Cline, the founder of the Save the Seed Energy Centre and senior Pastor of the New Life Baptist Church.
