LONDON, UK - To mark Territory Day 2020 in the Virgin Islands (VI), which is the commemoration of the day on which the Territory gained self-governing status while still being a British colony, the Territorial Flag today, July 1, 2020, graced the skies of London at the UK Foreign Office as is customary on the day.

In a photo posted on twitter by the VI Governor's Office, the caption said, "The BVI flag flies proudly in the skies of London today, in celebration of Territory Day and our special partnership."

Today's celebration also comes at a time when the VI is seeking more autonomy to govern itself through constitutional review and limiting the powers of the Governor and his office.

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) in a June 30, 2020 statement said while Territory Day is usually marked with a display of culture and talents followed by a ceremonial gathering, the coronavirus pandemic has changed the agenda.

Taking more control of the Territory

"This year, COVID-19 makes it impractical for us to meet physically to do these things, but thanks to technology, we are able to gather in a virtual way to reflect, celebrate and to give God thanks for our milestones."

He said Territory Day 2020 also meets the Territory at a crossroad, "Our vision cannot be crafted by anyone else nor should anyone else’s agenda be imposed upon us. This is something we have to do together as a united people."

According to the Leader of Government Business, no-one can better understand the mind and aspirations of Virgin Islanders than Virgin Islanders.

"That is why one thing that we must achieve in this Constitutional Review exercise, if nothing else, is to ensure that Virgin Islanders are put back into control of the development and direction of our Territory."

They sent 250,000 pieces of equipment including testing kits to help in the fight against covid-19. Looks like people still want more from UK without having anything to give back. Funny BVI talking independence but we can't even foster a meaningful partnership with the UK... All we can do is show how needy and dependent we really are. So sick of this retarded place!

The UK has nothing directly to do with the flag.

Special relationship?! Give us a break! Governor’s office think we’re really blind and stupid. We see right through you. You exploit us and we pay you to do so. Wake up VI!! No masks or PPE from UK, no tests, one broken Navy ship for all 14 remaining uk colonies during hurricane season! No wonder drakes give us masks and Canadians fixed our power lines after Irma. Imperial uk a mess and a joke. Get out Governor and your all white office too. Squeezing our necks for your enjoyment! Luxury lifestyle at our expense!!

@strupez ..I agree with you so how proud are they really.. To me all this is for show..though from all accounts different forms of gambling were being done “under the table” and I know you saw this as a revenue-generating venture for our economy, I was never in favor of your gambling legislation For I believe it’s against Godly Principles, but I must Still commend you for trying to look out for our people.. I have never seen a Premier so invested in us as you are and have been so I thank u Hon. Premier.. if we stay a faithful people In God and Trust Him to carry and sustain us and our country, we not not be needing the UK and just as other Caribbean islands are independent and doing well, so will we..Hon. Premier, I pray God will continue to Bless you and guide you and your team in making the right decisions ....
