TRUNK BAY, Tortola, VI - While Hurricanes Irma and Maria have had a negative effect on the Virgin Islands’ environment, animal species of all kinds are coming back.

It was on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, that onlookers and Conservations and Fisheries Department Officials, noticed a 700-pound leatherback turtle laying eggs on Trunk Bay on the north side of Tortola.

According to Mervin D. Hastings, Acting Deputy Chief Conservations and Fishers Officer with the local environmental agency, leatherback turtles lay 90 to 100 eggs on average, and they take another 60 days to hatch.

Turtles tagged by Government

The turtles usually make a number of trips to lay their eggs and according to Mr Hastings, “all these turtles are tagged, and this Department has been monitoring turtles around the Virgin Islands for almost 20 years.”

It was a spectacular site to see, as the turtle came in for another visit, a few nights ago, did her job and left. Now it’s time to wait to see the little ones after hatching heading out to sea!

Our roving cameras will be on standby.

They like some people I know; they keep coming regardless of how they call down the place.

This is encouraging news for the threatened leatherback turtle, one of the largest turtles. Growth and development along the coast has reduced the number of nesting areas. Further, only a few of the hatchlings makes it to adulthood. As such, the turtle and its eggs must be protected to protect the specie from becoming endangered, ie, becoming extinct. Government must take an aggressive stance in protecting turtles with heavy penalties for violators.
