Petty contracts not yet signed for RT sewerage project
At a January 12, 2012 meeting, Hon. Mark Vanterpool, Minister for Communications and Works, had disclosed to residents that between seven and eight contracts were authorised by the Ministry to execute the sewerage project.
He had also explained that the contracts had to be reviewed before given the green light. The estimated cost of the petty contracts was in the ballpark of $470,000.
When the Ministry was contacted for an update yesterday, January 24, 2012, its Communications Officer, Natasha Lettsome, stated that no contracts were inked and added that the acting Permanent Secretary (PS) Arlene Thompson “could not say at this time when the contracts will be signed”.
Meanwhile, Hon. Vanterpool had notified residents that the smelly issue of sewerage in the Virgin Islands’ capital - Road Town - could be remedied by May 2012.
“It is Government’s intention to work very hard towards making that deadline possible,” he had stated to a small group of residents and business owners when pressed for a deadline.
The project, which is managed by CBE Engineering Associates Limited, will be done in phases to minimise the disruption.
The replacement of pipes in the First Bank area from Simply Delicious, towards Bolo’s Department Store will be the first phase of the project, which will be followed by works carried out from Tortola Department Store to the pumping station at the Roundabout.
