PETER ISLAND, VI – Members of the Bayside Blazers basketball team were gifted with an extraordinary opportunity by one of its contributors, the Peter Island Resort & Spa, last evening, May 14, 2014 ahead of their first game in the BVI Basketball Federation League in the Senior Division.

The League which began on May 11, 2014 will have its games played at the Multi-Sports Complex in Road Town.

Bayside Blazers a new basketball outfit on the sporting scene in the Virgin Islands (VI), are expected to make their first mark in the League next Wednesday, May 21, 2014 when they come up against the Kings.

Team members and officials were offered a guided tour of the five-star Resort and treated to cocktails and dinner which was followed by a very inspiring motivational speech given by the Resort’s General Manager Mr Wilbert A. Mason.

Mason commented that his company’s involvement with the team could be seen in the context of its continuous support of the VI community.

“We have made a commitment as a company to continue to support the local community and this is one of the many things that we will be doing throughout the year to make sure that we stay in touch with the local community.”

He encouraged the team to be all they can be and never give up. Mr. Mason told the squad to set goals and support each other as the sky can be the limit not only in the sports of basketball but in their life and career. Mr. Mason also offered the Team members tips on how to prepare for a job interview.

Meanwhile, Coach Rhennie O. Phipps saw the outing as an ideal opportunity for the team members to bond and felt it created an atmosphere for the team to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Although he acknowledged that there would be several difficult challenges ahead for the team, Phipps felt that the team’s general cohesion would serve them well going forward, “There are some very good players and very good teams [in the league], but I think if we stick with what we are going there to do then we’re going to be fine,” Phipps said.

He noted that the Blazers have been training hard and he has instilled that their chances will only be enhanced by the sacrifices that they are willing to make to achieve the necessary success.

Phipps cited the team’s speed and conditioning as some of the main strengths and felt that this strategy will help them to overcome their competition. “Once we compete we will be fine,” Phipps added.

Team Captain Terry E. S. Charles also expressed hopes that the Blazers could represent well during the league and was thankful for the support that came from the sponsors.

The Bayside Blazers Basketball team which was born out of a dissolved team DA 3rd has a 15 member squad and is managed by former Permanent Secretary Julian Willock.

Other contributors and sponsors of the team are BCQS, Hon. Julian Fraser RA, Caribbean Insurers Limited, JML Techno Ltd, Digicel BVI, Nagico Insurances & Scrub Island Resort & Spa.
