Performance the key for VI @ U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers
The full squad has been hard at work for the past few weeks down at Capoons Bay and for the majority of them, it was the first time getting back together as a group since the trip to the Cayman Islands, where they played as the U15 Girls in a CONCACAF Tournament.
Group 3 includes the hosts, St Kitts and Nevis, along with Dominica and Trinidad and Tobago.
The first game for the BVI is today, Saturday, when they will face St Kitts and Nevis at 8pm. Then on Monday the girls play against Trinidad and Tobago (5.30pm), followed by a game against Dominica (5.30pm) on Wednesday August 26, 2015.
BVIFA Technical Director, Katie Rowson, has been keeping her eye on the girls at training and in a couple of practice matches and is quietly confident that they have all gelled well and can surprise a few of the more illustrious group rivals.
“Really pleased with the squad so far, they played well together in the practice games and seem to have retained a lot from what they learnt last year. Hopefully we can just progress on from there and do better than last year (Cayman Islands U15’s), not necessarily in terms of results, but certainly in terms of performance.”
With performance, Rowson believes the right results will come, but playing against the Caribbean power houses, such as Trinidad and Tobago, will be a very tough challenge.
“Absolutely not about results, but performance,” Rowson reiterated. “We know what we want to achieve in comparison to the Caymans, the World Cup Group is a lot tougher proposition, but I believe if the squad stays together and gets the opportunity to carry on training they will be able to go further than any other BVI Football team has in any competition.”
The squad dynamics have been brilliant according to Rowson and even allowing for the fact that three or four key players are unavailable, she believes the team will have the “X” Factor in Nevis and may just surprise a few people.
The full squad is Dani Taylor, Jackisha Rigobert, Kaylah Skelton, Gabby Dawson, Lilly Pierce, Emily Lowrey, Abbie Heywood, Katie Lowrey, Morgan Creque, Tia Modeste, Olivia Messum, Shevonne Vanterpool, D’Avian Williams, Sheniece St John, Bethany Howarth and Akira Phillips.
The CFU qualifiers will be played in St Kitts from August 20-27, and will serve as the initial stage for the U-17 Women's World Cup quest.
