DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has said his government don’t get enough credit for protecting the Virgin Islands (VI) during the COVID-19 pandemic, accusing persons of trying to malign the Government’s name and successes as well as to embroil legislators in slander for power.

“I recognise, Mr Speaker, that there are a group of people getting together and their only mission is to malign my name and this government's name for what reasons I can't tell you other than power, cause I haven't done them anything,” Premier Fahie stated during the Seventh Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) held at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom, Tortola, on April 22, 2021.

Gov't facing reputational damage

The Premier was at the time speaking during 'Other Business' when he pointed out that his government was being attacked by forces and Opposition Members trying to damage the reputation of his administration.

“I don't mind them criticising policy, that is your democratic right… I don't mind them criticising programmes that we're doing, that is your democratic right, but when they're getting into slander and they're getting into mischief and speaking as if they have facts to destroy persons' name… those who hate you laughing and those who with you wondering if it true.”

Premier Fahie noted; however, that he has the experience to deal with those issues given his years in the House of Assembly (HoA).

“Mr Speaker, they leave out anything that has been done good during COVID-19 and they just tell you about all the problems that are still going on, which we understand that they have to be addressed,” he said.

The Premier said, regarding the $40 million grant from Social Security Board that was channelled into the pandemic, every dime of the money can be accounted for and not in the pockets of legislators as far as he can tell.

Gov't innovatively pursued programmes to benefit VI

“Yet you hear all kind of stories. Sometimes we wonder how could persons get to those kinds of stories. As a matter of fact, most of the people who helped with the grants, come back and tell us they need more money because of the ongoing pressures.

"Yet to hear persons in this House outside throwing all kinds of negative things. Why?” Hon Fahie asked while telling the legislature that slander must be addressed in the House.

The Premier remarked that the government has innovatively followed up on initiatives during hard times such as unemployment benefits, business grants, food programmes, and more.

“All hell broke loose with these things because persons have some stories that sound good,” the Premier said, adding that the Government has been able to achieve all that it could in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic with the help of God.

The Virgin Islands has been commended both regionally and internationally for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three days ago Premier Fahie was tooting his own horn because the UK Secretary of State Dominic R. Raab praised the VIP government's COVID-19 response. Today he's complaining that he doesn't get enough credit.

Those with a victim mentality are destined to succumb to their own imagination.

Everyone who seeks power should be regarded with the greatest suspicion and watched carefully. . Long experience has taught us that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. So when you apply for the job, be aware, that it isn’t going to be a bed of rose petals laid at your feet.

Agree 150%. Political Leaders get criticized and talked about everyday be it good or bad, mostly bad. Complaining about it is a sign of weakness. You knew what you were singing up for so you have to deal with it. you wanted it, you got it.You want your life to be private, stay away from Politics.

do not complain. People talk. That's people. Do not ignore people however. thats not good.
The thing is to know how to deal with people. the people who you have around you, they need to have your back at all times. they need to defend you when you are not in a room. build those people up so that they got your back at all times. that's the trick.

Mr. Premier, simply go home to a nice home cooked meal and relax. The ones that according to you is maligning your name and the Government name, simply call them out. When you fist took office you stated that someone, correct me if I am wrong had threatened your life and you knew who they were and that was the reason for the bodyguards that was ordered to shoot to kill? Why did you not call them out?

    Honourable,
Keep you eyes on the prize and put asunder them say she say and they say. It is not relevant at this point. The opposition is the watchdog, they are to say things, but it does not matter. In a pandemic you cannot shift gear on this one, the moment you start worrying about what is been said your focus would become dwarf, retard and paralyzed and it minimize your love. Remember that a leader main focus is to be steadfast with the vision.

Maybe just maybe it's because you still owe 650 businesses their stimulus, a bunch of people never received any SS and there is a lot that over a year later are drowning because all you gave them was hot air while making their lives even more difficult with the extra red tape and hoops to jump through??
But it's ok I am sure they all forgive you for not actually doing what you said you would do to help while wasting money on starting ego projects that the Govt can't afford to finish. Sorry, you can't pay your rent/mortgage / feed your family / fix your house but we are just going to drop $10,000 each time on stages and chairs for opening the port, making a market, doing the EE sewage system,,, Smoke and mirrors does not feed people.
