ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Talk show host Julio S. Henry has argued that Representatives be given at least a million dollars each to execute projects in their districts and said residents should rise up to prevent neglect.

“There is absolutely no reason why under the system that we have now that each district, every time the budget is decided upon can’t get a set amount of money. There’s no reason,” Henry said on the Speak Your Mind TV show aired on April 12, 2014.

He repeated a claim where a District Representative allegedly stated in the House of Assembly that there were some guerilla politics going on in the Virgin Islands since the Representative had been submitting requests for money for repair works in their district and had been getting nowhere.

Henry questioned why, following the most recent budget passed, each Representative could not be given a million dollars to execute works in their district and be able to get things done easier and quicker.

According to Henry, the residents in the affected districts that are being neglected when this kind of ‘petty politics’ is being played out, need to get up and start making noise.

“…the people need to rise up,” Henry commented while observing that non-elected officials are being allowed to execute works in the Districts where elected officials are being cast aside.

He charged that the situation was not unique to the current administration as it also obtained with several different governments in the past.

One caller argued that the current system was not working and advocated that a type of local government system should be put in place where revenues could be collected for each district to function properly.

“We have to control [and] collect our own monies, our own revenues thinking about our local concerns if the national government is thinking of national concerns,” the caller argued.

When people sit on the outside and don't have a clue how things work, they can get away with saying anything.

Sam needs to get it streight. Even districts with elected officials in power are not getting anything done in their districts. The treasury says they ain't got no money so even if money is allocated under the official heads, the money is not in treasury, just on paper so nothing doing. I do agree with Sam on one thing, they should be given at least a million dollars each and not the medioca 200,000 or 250,000. This leaves them at the mercy of the ministers to get anything done.

Though I agree with wanting new government, I really worry that PEP is going to split the VIP vote and NDP will get back in again. We see it all the time in US where a third party takes from the most socially-conscious and conservatives and big business get re-elected. Don't know what the answer is except to re-structure VIP with fresh faces. that is what people want-- fresh blood!
