ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Representative for the Second District and Chairman of the People’s Empowerment Party (PEP) Honourable J. Alvin Christopher believes democracy in the Virgin Islands is being undermined and people are afraid to express their democratic right to speak or to be associated with any group of their choice.

He was speaking on the inaugural PEP Radio Show heard last night September 29, 2014 on ZBVI 780 AM.

Hon Christopher said that there is a fear among persons to speak out or even to see themselves as being associated with anyone who does not hold the view of a sitting Government.

“The fact remains that people are afraid. There is a fear that pervades this Territory that makes me nervous and in any democracy the freedom to express yourself is one that no one should tamper with,” said Hon Christopher.

“People should not walk around in fear because they don’t share the same views and ideas as the person who is in power at the time and this is something we must stand up for,” said Hon Christopher.

“Democracy is something that offers different views and concerns and one should be able to express their views clearly and without slandering or breaking the law,” he said.

“One of the fundamental principles of democracy is execution…is the balances of systems of Government. And also the House of Assembly,” he said.

“And when one is elected to Parliament you speak not only for yourself but for the people whom you represent,” he said.

“You will recall some time ago I raised that matter in the House that I think democracy is being subverted and these are the things that the People’s Empowerment Party would stand for to make sure that each and every individual has an opportunity to express themselves according to the law and the Constitution of the Virgin Islands,” he said.

President of PEP Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru interjected saying, “if legislators cannot even speak how can ordinary citizens feel empowered to speak when even legislators are being denied their democratic rights in the House of Assembly.”

There are more people speaking now than I can ever remember at any point in the BVI. Everyone has a talk show now, everyone is calling in, everyone has a story online, everybody blogging. Which fear is he speaking about? People are speaking their minds everyday and that's a good thing. Stop trying to fool the people because it will not work.

If you have no fear, then why not use your REAL name to post your blog?

It is a fact that people are afraid of speaking out against this government. Just ask anyone on the street and watch as their eyes dart about looking to see who might be watching and listening.

I am not saying the fear is rational or that it is based on anything of substance, but it is present nonetheless.

there is a constant fear of retaliation against family, job, reputation etc. It happens. Freeing up a culture of intimidation will take some time. In the meantime, let's hold officials accountable in upholding the laws. Clearly, there are two cases that illustrate the need for oversight and consequences. In neither case has anyone gone to jail or told to stand up. wrong wrong. There is some truth to what is being said. And those speaking out are subtly being squashed. true.

having to "hide" to speak-out is NOT the SAME as being able to speak freely.....

Can't believe it. Hon. Christopher has done the same thing when he was in power. They all put fear in the people if they voice their opinions, enforce the laws, or, associate with person or groups that they don't like. The politicians in power take away democracy. The Premier is the King of this type of behaviour. The entire country is controlled by fear of the Government and the businessmen, who have the Government in their pockets. That is a fact and you can take it to the bank. No change is in sight. A country of oppressed people.

the polititions are supposed to set policy but they have too much control of every little detail. As mr Elton Georges just said if a person wants status it is politics that gove it not the immigration board. If you want a petty contract it is the politition who gives it, not the public works. If you want a piece of govn land then it is politics that gets it. Is anyone stupid enough to immagine if you publicly disagree with your representative your child can get a govn job, a piece of land, apetty contract. OF CAUSE THERE IS FEAR AND IT IS JUSTIFIED! Only solution is to put the decisions in the hands of statutary boards, above the table. Let the sunshine in.

Lying seems to be the only training that these NDP receive from Glover Parks and they excel at it.

People are still afraid to speak, because they won't even ask a question when something appears to be off limits. Why no one will ask the question, "why are we paying $10 departure tax to return to BVI from St. Thomas? The ferry clerks say it is a VI Port Authority Tax.. When VIPA was contacted the spoke person said, Not So. Who exactly is collecting this money, and whose coffers is it going into? Why we can't get a receipt for this money? Yes I am afraid of speaking to certain issues because I need my job, and this should not be so. This is a free country and people should be able to speak freely without fear of victimization.

No surprise here. There are too many areas where proper governance is lacking, and I'm not so sure that the other side pr the PEP can bring the leadership that is needed, but they certainly can't do any worse. The worse part about this, is that NDP polticians, including MArk and Myon and Ronnie are totally in denial. Knowing that you have significant leadership shortcoming, is half the battle NDP
