ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Senior Boys Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) Team saw off the concerted challenge from Ivanna Eudora Kean High School (IEKHS) of St Thomas, USVI, 74-63, to retain their title at the 2nd Annual ESHS Invitational High School Basketball Tournament on Saturday March 12, 2016.

The event started on Friday March 11, 2016 in the Multi Purpose Sports Complex, with St George’s High School, Gift Hill, Antilles, ESHS and the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies (VIST).

VIST defeated Gift Hill, Antilles defeated St George’s, IEKHS (G)defeated ESHS (G) and ESHS (B) defeated IEKHS (B), but that was just the start of the drama which ran late into the night, when after a further twelve hours of games between the Boys and Girls, it came down to the wire.

First the IEKHS Boys pulled off a win over ESHS 84-78, to send the Championship into a decider and then the IEKHS Girls outplayed the ESHS Girls, 40-36, to lift the Girls Championship.

IEKHS defeat ESHS Girls

Ahlani Cook, who was named Tournament MVP, led the Lady Devil Rays with 11 points, whilst Shelcy Hodge notched 14 for ESHS as did Makayla Pickering.

Hodge picked up the awards for Most Rebounds and Highest Points scorer during the Girls Tournament. ESHS’s Ambah Penn picked up Most Blocks and Pickering Most Assists.

ESHS Boys rebound to defeat IEKHS

The Boys Championship was decided in great fashion as the earlier defeat to IEKHS was left well and truly in the locker room and the game was taken to the visitors in true Rams style.

“In the loss we didn’t play ESHS Basketball, I let them know it was just a game and we had to move on. We refocused and we were more aggressive, when they hit us, we hit them back,” said ESHS coach Steve E. Parillon.

The on court inspiration for ESHS came from Franklyn L. Penn Jr and D’Moi M. Hodge who scored 24 points and 21 respectively.

Penn was named as Tournament MVP and spoke highly of his team’s performance in winning the Championship. “After the semi final game we realised we had been playing a lot of one on one basketball, but in the final we got back to playing as the ESHS family. We work hard every day and tonight [and] it showed in how we stuck together and played together.”

Nixon Hamilton picked up the Most Rebounds award, Taylor Jackson Most Blocks, both of VIST.

Organiser of the two day event, Parillon was also quick to thank all the volunteers who had helped make it such a successful tournament. He also hopes to make it even bigger next year and will be sitting down with the various parties to ensure that it happens.

Those eshs boys really played their hearts out. I am so proud or them. The eshs girls also pleasantly surprised me, even though they didnt take the championship Congrats to the teams and their coach, Steve Parillon.

I must say VG has a lot of talented youngsters who always tend to fall under the radar. They need to be given a chance to compete in these tournaments.

Two boys in the picture older than boy who won MVP! It don't make any sense. What are the still doing at the high school. And not one of them looking like they going anywhere any time soon. Grades are very poor.

      Wrong message being sent

So, no other PE teacher from ESHS was involved? I refuse to believe that. Next time Mr. Organizer say something about them too. Don't be selfish

I am all smiles and feeling proud to see the great accomplishment of our students. Especially to Franklyn, Nixon and Makayla, whom I thought during their primary school years. Kudos guys.
