ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Virgin Islands News Online’s sources within the Ministry of Education and Culture and National Democratic Party (NDP) moments ago confirmed to our newsroom that Mrs Brenda Lettsome-Tye has been sent to act as the Director of Youth Affairs & Sports.

She was reportedly reassigned by the Education and Culture Minister, Hon Myron V. Walwyn, to hold the post until further notice.

Our reliable sources also disclosed that several persons have applied for the post, including Jason A. Edwin, Avelinda Freeman, and Paul A. Hewlett.

Ever since the Acting Director of Youth Affairs and Sports Mr Patrick A. Harrigan was forced to retire in October 2014, this news site had accurately reported that the Minister was torn between Mr Paul A. Hewlett who was allegedly promised the job and the Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture Brenda Lettsome-Tye.

Mr Hewlett was subsequently given the job in an acting capacity even though it was reported by our sources that Mrs Lettsome-Tye had become Hon Walwyn’s favourite because “she gets things done....she is efficient.”

It remains unclear who was recommended by the Public Service Commission (PSC) or if the Ministry of Education and Culture ever made a recommendation to the PSC.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Dr Marcia Potter, denied having any knowledge of Mrs Lettsome-Tye's reassignment, stating that as far as she knows Mrs Lettsome-Tye is the Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture.

"I can't confirm anything because nothing has been confirmed on that...the only thing I can say is that she is the Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture," Dr Potter told Virgin Islands News Online.

Brenda may not know much about sports but if she surrounds herself with a supporting cast like Jason Edwin, Violet DeCastro, Dean, Sharlene Hill Chinno and a great SAO.....She can't goooooo wrong.....

Unfortunately, the "supporting cast" WILL NOT work with her. Remember she was there before and what was the outcome...she was removed because she allegedly was the problem.

To me Jason Edwin should get the job. That position is for someone who know the ins and outs of Sports and who would be able to take sports to another level for the country. Its sad to see how the athletics are in the BVI when there is so much talent.

Mrs Lettsome-Tye, Let all those talk what they want. Being a director is more than what those simple minded people could comprehend. Shine like a diamond. Grass roots Virgin Islands got your back.

Jason should get this job, this is an easy decision.
    • bvi (10/04/2015, 10:02) Like (8) Dislike (5) Reply

Why? Jason is a johhny come lately. Let someone with years of experience in Govt run the d@rn thing. I still say Lettsome-Tye is the right fit. Please note Mrs DeCastro did not apply for the job, therefore she could not be considered.

      • @ bvi (10/04/2015, 13:53) Like (3) Dislike (4) Reply
Jason may not have the experience but I'm sure he has the qualification. Im sure he has the least his BA and that is the requirement for the job. Plus he is no younger with experience than OJ and Mitch Turnbull who are running for politics that will make decisions in the running our country. So please don't talk about milk in faces. Experience can only come by starting.

The least is to put him under her and let him run sports.

Most definitely Jason should get the job. Or they can let Brenda be Director and Jason Director of Sports

Why have we cultured our minds to think that a person needs years of experience doing one and only one thing to do one job?

Most successful people have little or no knowledge of a certain field. But, in turn surrounds their self with people who knows.

It's call strategy and after that it's delegating.

In a nutshell, anyone can hold the position or any at that; once you have the right support staff.

Balo2cents I agree with you. A combination of Tye and Edwind alongr with Decastro can turn that Department into what the BVI needs. Edwin has the sporting experience, Tye the managing skills and Decastro is and experience hard working woman. The department needs the change.
  • wow (10/04/2015, 10:16) Like (3) Dislike (0) Reply
It does not matter who is selected to oversee the Department with naysayers in the midst. If Violet or Jason's name was the headliner there would be negativity all up through the mix too.

Jason Edwin can play a very intricate part in the sporting arena for the British Virgin Islands. He is back home now and it would in our best interest to use him alongside Tye-Lettsome to move another aspect of sports forward.

I think when those children got left on the dock, the other day, and no one was there to tell them, they can't go to St. Thomas. I say, lawd Sir, somebody could get fired over this. Simple, it shows incompetence.

Youth Work or Working with youth is a very delicate job. No one should take a job if they are not qualify or refined to a certain standard. Because, you could do more harm than good. I believe Ms. Tye could manage that office along with Ms. DeCastro, but they got to be a male to define the area of sports and what core values he would use to establish the respect for that department, planning, delegating and executing is never easy, he would need an assistant also.

I don't know what is been done for the social side of the Youth Department. This is one of the real area, of youth work, how are our youth experiencing inclusion and participation are they allow to formulate things like “study groups", "accountable peers" while guided by their coordinators. Help youths to believe in themselves requires people with strong social skills, and I am not taking about "good morning, and excuse me and thank you. I am talking about motivators, prayer warriors, people who can move our youths to a point where they can envision their future. Give them something, to think about, dream about, and plan how they can achieve with people guiding them. It could help to deterred teenage pregnancy, unemployment, early sexual activities, crime etc. keep am occupy then there will be no idle hands for the devil.

Working with youth takes on a day and night position, it’s never an 8-5 job. It is real leadership skills, it determines who gets to the top, not just because you got a name, but it is how you intend to nurture those young minds: what you will use to give them a different mindset. Those Youth Coordinators need to brush up, sweep up and step up on their skills. Leadership is real, and it needs people with real guts to lead.

Hearing Mrs The on Spotlight discussing the youth policy she did a better job than Hewlett. Given her a chance she will bring those 10 or more objectives to fruition.
