ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Controversy seems to be brewing regarding the leasing of land around the territory’s lone racetrack, Ellis Thomas Downs, in Sea Cows Bay for the grazing of horses from Family Affair Racing Stables as a deal that was allegedly being negotiated fell through.

It has been reported that Virgin Islands’ business and cultural icon Patsy C. Lake, the matriarch of Family Affair Racing Stables, has been speaking to the principals of the racetrack with a view to leasing some of their property.

However, when contacted Mrs Lake denied reports that she is seeking land around the area of Ellis Thomas Downs to allow her horses to recreate.

This news site has received reports suggesting that the popular businesswoman was seeking an arrangement where she would be facilitated with the land.

No knowledge of any deal

“I don’t know anything about that. I’m hearing those reports too but they are not true... not to my knowledge,” Mrs Lake said.

We even spoke to Patsy C. Lake’s son Alex V. Lake who denied any knowledge of the issue.

“I don’t know anything about that. I’m lost.”

Negotiations happened but nothing was finalised

However, we spoke to one of the persons concerned with the racetrack regarding the deal and this person shed light on the situation.

“There is no such arrangement. I know she came to me concerning leasing a portion or property for the releasing of two of her animals. I tried to enter into a deal with them and that didn’t go through and there is no other deal on the table that I know of,” said the person who declined to be named.

According to the source, Mrs Lake wanted to lease a portion of some personal property near to the track and not land encompassing the track facilities themselves.

Asked why nothing had been finalised, the source said, “We just didn’t come to a stable agreement. That’s all.”

Attempts to reach both Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn and his Permanent Secretary Dr Marcia Potter for a comment on the issue proved futile.
