SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – A new supermarket has opened in the 3rd District in Sea Cows Bay, with the aim of bringing reasonable prices and quality products to residents.

Proprietor of Park and Save Supermarket Hytham Bazzar which is located below Sensus Gym in the Manuel Reef Marina, said his aim is to bring a variety of quality products and excellent service but most of all, value for money with great prices.

“Instead of people going to the USVI to shop, I am bringing it here to the BVI,” Mr. Bazzar told Virgin Islands News Online at the opening of the supermarket yesterday July 4, 2012. “I notice that the prices here are very high and people need to get value for their money. The economy is very hard these days, every penny counts, and I am here to help the people and try my best. We sell the best, we sell quality, we believe in good prices and good items because if you come cheap and you have a cheap name you will not make it.”

Asked why he chose to bring his business to the 3rd district, the businessman of Syrian descent who was born and raised in the Virgin Islands, said he felt it was a good future for his business and a good place to start. “It’s a good location, the marina is here and the people of the third district are good supporters.”

“Anything you want we have it and if we don’t have it just tell us and we will get it,” he proudly stated.

Mr. Bazzar thanked the people of the 3rd district for having him in their district and is asking for their support while he also expressed thanks to the Government of the Virgin Islands for allowing him to operate the business.

At the brief ceremony yesterday, 3rd District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser, RA cut the ribbon to officially open the supermarket. Highlighting how commerce has changed over the decades, he recalled years ago when persons of Syrian nationality were walking around door to door selling items for as low as $2.50 and those same men today have become full-fledged merchants in the food business.

Hon. Fraser said he learnt that Mr. Bazzar’s father came to the Virgin Islands in 1965 and sat up business and shows how long they have been doing business in the Territory in various capacities.

He said the last thing he would want is to send a message to anyone that they are not welcomed in the community and he would like the district to grow with businesses. He further appealed to the businessman to be kind to his constituents.

Park and Save is opened, Mondays to Fridays 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 7 a.m.to 10 p.m. and on Sundays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Imagin, Bobby's had that space leased for a year and a half and did nothing, now when they lease the space to these people they start to kick up bout we don't want the Syrians taking over the food business. What a bunch of crock. Then the Trade Department had the Gaul to hold up the man trade licence. Let's see what I'm hearing, Road Town Wholesale (RTW) which dominates the food business in the BVI with both wholesale and retail (RiteWay Supermarks), and still have the distributorship for almost every food product (which means even if Bobby's buy Heineken overseas RTW still gets a commission), they supply every retailer including Bobby's an OneMart/KMark, but it is OK because Haycraft who owns Road Town Wholesale is WHITE? These people has been in the BVI for over 70 years and deserves to be treated with respect. Food prices are driving people crazy and something has to be done. Sea Cows Bay is like dead, no business no jobs, thank God someone saw it fit to come in and start a new business. The Restaurant next door is closed, someone need to come and reopen that soon. Government pulled their support from the WaterSport next door and is looking for that to close too. Thanks to these people for their business. I hope the people of the District supports them.

Imagin the Mail Man and his Supperette posses from Palestina had a petition going around the village trying to stop these people (belongers) from opening their store because they are Syrians?

Lets not put this down as a race issue. And lets not be ignorant in our posting of stories - most people referred to in the BVI as Syrians are actually not from Syria! That aside, i like the look of the cashier so I will be shopping there!

It seems crazy to read some of the racist comments about this store. I shopped at this store in 2014 and remember the men who worked there. They were courteous and helpful. Seems to me that if they didnt open the store, it would have stayed vacant and that would have been worse for the residents and the economy. A free market is simple - If the prices and service are a good, value then shop there, if not, then don't and they will go out of business. If you go out of your way to shop somewhere else and pay more money because you don't like their race - then you only hurt yourself. That kind of attitude will only allow the other shops to continue charging more and that hurts everyone. What did those guys at this store ever do to hurt you? this is crazy and sad.

I had a boat at Manuel Reef Marina for a few years and we appreciated so much that there was a grocery store there. Friendly people, fair prices and super convenient. Okay the selection was like what you would find at a big store but at least we could get the essentials. I don't know if they were Syrian or Israeli or what,. but they are good people. Now the people that run the little marina boat supply store in that building, they are the ones with attitude!
