Panthers plan Fun Day!
All the local football teams have been invited to enter teams in the seven-a-side competition and many mouth-watering “re-matches” are eagerly awaited by fans and players alike.
Will the Ballstarz turn up looking for a third trophy, will the Islanders regain the winning ways, will One Love play a whole game, will the Old Madrid Masters prove years of experience and the addition of Monty Butler to their ranks equals a winning formula?
Whilst not confirmed for this year, last year’s event included a match-up between the Panthers Ladies and the BVI Under 20 National Team. Who could forget Linda “Champagne” Alexander flowing down the wings or Sharlene Pond looking like a much more attractive and fitter Trevor Peters. She scored goals too!
The tournament begins at 10.00 a.m. and teams have been asked to submit their registration forms complete with a signing fee of $10 per player by October 19.
Food and drink are as likely to flow as goals and with “Rugga” and “Zico” keeping the music and commentary lively and entertaining. It will also be the last event to take place on the field before the re-naming ceremony which is slated for October 31.
The new name “Roger Hodge Park” is in memory of the late Roger Hodge, a Virgin Islander who made the Sea Cows Bay softball field his sports clinic to teach and train youth in the community to excel in the sport.
Chairman of the committee to name the Roger Hodge Park, Julian Willock told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “Mr. Hodge had a passion for softball and demonstrated commitment to the sport by training others as well as representing the Territory locally, regionally and internationally.”
Such was his love for sport that just for one day he wouldn’t have minded football taking over!
