VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Word reaching our newsroom and calls from outraged parents, teachers and students is that the 14 year old male student from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre (BFEC) on the sister island of Virgin Gorda who beat a female student, sending her to the hospital, has been given permission from the Ministry of Education to return to school.

The controversial Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn (AL), who many have accused of making the education system in the Virgin Islands political, also approved the final decision, according to Ministry Officials.

The beating & bulling

It was October of 2016 that the male student was responsible for brutally beating a young female student who had to be hospitalised at the state-owned Peebles Hospital on the main Island of Tortola, with head and neck injuries.

It was alleged that while standing along the corridor on the school’s compound, the female student of Dominican Republic decent was pushed by the same 14 year old, who is a student of the school.

After inquiring why he had pushed her, the boy reportedly threw a plate of food in her face and started to deal her blows.

During the beating, he allegedly kicked her in the face and stomped on her head.

Following the incident, the Royal Virgin Islands Police charged the young man with occasioning actual bodily harm, according to a police statement last year.

Many parents, teachers and other students were under the impression that the student was expelled from the public school. However, last week the staff of the school was informed by the Education Department, with the approval of Minister Walwyn, that the student who viciously attacked the young lady would be returned to the same school.

The Ministry claimed that the young boy deserved an education and should be given a second, third and fourth chances.

Ministry pushing matter for Minister

It is reported that officials from both the Ministry and Department of Education was on hand at the school on Virgin Gorda yesterday January 31, 2017 to listen to concerns of the faculty and staff; however, the student is now back to school.

The Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) of the school has expressed outrage and strong objections over the Minister’s decision to allow the boy back and is expected to convene a meeting shortly to write the Minister with compelling reasons why the student should not be allowed to return.

It is the PTA’s view that students at the school have a right to be taught in a safe environment and teachers need a safe place to work. According to a draft petition obtained by our newsroom, the PTA’s position is “While we don’t want to come across as antagonistic, but we don’t want to be ambiguous neither; we are standing with the staff, students and majority of the parents that this young man should not be permitted to return to this school.”

Teacher speaks out

A female teacher from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, speaking to our newsroom on condition of anonymity, said “I can see Walwyn hands all over this decision to let the student back…everything for him is politics, he cares nothing about discipline in the schools, safety of we who work here…we must take a stand….no one is saying the young man does not deserve an education or a second change, but there are other options like night school….”

We also obtained the draft letter in the form of a petition that is expected to go to Minister Walwyn and the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Both acting Chief Education Officer (CEO) Connie E. George and BFEC Principal Glenda I. A. Stevens could not be reached for a comment as of time of publication.

This is what happens when you have someone who wants to be all things to all people. Should this student be involved in another incident sue them for providing an unsafe environment for students!!!!!!

While I understand the desire to rehabilitate the young man, that desire CAN NOT be mortgaged against the safety, well-being, and the real physical, emotional, and psychological trauma that is caused by allowing him to continue to inhabit that space. This is a serious miscalculation that values the aggressor's education over the life of those he has traumatised.

NONSENSE! They didnt they do a background check to know that this child have a problem? Had she been my child I would've give his @$$ the same blows he does give his father. God forgive me but that boy would've been in critical condition. This is EXACTLY why the problems will increase they keep slapping these children on their wrist and leaving them go to do the same thing. They won't be punished unless its a ministers child!

When is bad to bad (to return)? When someone is murdered? Maybe could find a way to have an alternate route of education for the young man instead of putting so many other childrens' education (to be given in a safe environment) at risk.

WHEN MY CHILD GO TO SCHOOL, MY CHILD IS UNDER THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SCHOOL. IF THE SCHOOL FAIL TO PROVIDE SAFETY FOR MY CHILD AND CAUSE HARM TO COME TO HER, THEN I WILL HOLD THE SCHOOL 100% ACCOUNTABLE, NO IF AND OR BUT. THIS BOY HARM MY DAUGHTER AND THE SCHOOL STILL SEND HIM BACK THEN I WOULD SUE THE SCHOOL , THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND THE MINISTRY FOR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR FAILING TO PROTECT FROM CHILD FROM WHAT I WOULD CALL DOMESTIC TERRORISM. AS A PARENT AND IF THAT BOY MAKE ANY ATTEMPTS TO HARM OR TAUNT MY CHILD, THEN THE MATTER WOULD BE IN MY HANDS BECAUSE THE LAW AND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM FAILED HER. HE WOULD BECOME MINES TO DEAL WITH AND IT WOULD BE HARSH. BVIG, YOU NEED TO DO BETTER THAN THAT.

Myron, the Minister of education does not deserve the Honourable infront his name. Perhaps one can now address him as The Questionable Myron Walwyn, Minister of Corrupt Education. His decisions and contribution to the Education System in the BVIs have all been in the negative. From a parent to a parent, and I will show some respect, Mr. Walwyn sir, this is my plea to you, GET IT TOGETHER, YOU ARE HURTING THE FUTURE OF BVIs, THE CHILDREN. If that bow tie is blocking the flow of oxygen to your brain and hamper your ability to think clearly, TAKE IT OFF!

The answer is simple. Keep your children home until he is removed from that school. I would not subject my son or daughter to a boy who is clearly dangerous. If the Minister won't protect my child while he or she is in school, then I surely will.

What you sew you shall reap also means that what you wish to others good or bad in public or in private shall surely come back to you. Am not saying that this child should not pay for his wrong but as teachers and parents think if it was your child, would you have like the olive branch extended to you because what aint meet you ant pass you.TEachers and principals must be compasionate to all students dont take sides but be the peace maker.which one of you would take on the task of mentoring a child who is in need of changing his or her bad ways? Then if you cant contribute good then dont contribute.Because you all will be only helping to create hatred in this society from young men and women who continue to feel unloved.Rember abusers give back what they have been dealth most of the time.Mr walyn is a wise minister, sir i salute you, every one deserves a second chance.

This is a sad situation. The safety of all in the school should be the first priority. This is easily obtained by removing the male student from the school. The second priority is the health and education of the male student. It is quite obvious that he is in need of psychological help and needs academic assistance also . In the long run, it would be better and cheaper to send the male student off island to get psychological and academical help than to send him back to old environment where he committed the crime. This does three things:

    1. The employees and students live in fear at the school.

    2. The male student feels that he is in charge.

    3. Other students may copy his behaviour since the punishment is nil.

The latter comments are greatly accepted. This is what one can call constructive contribution, this child needs help but it must be done with love compassion and care begining with the community parents and teachers, come on our favorite line we all know it.(It takes a whole village to raise a child) well here is our chance, be kind, be humane and responsible and help this young man to turn around as well as all involved lets strenghten all to their best ability. No pulling down come on bvi lift the weak ones up and continue to hold the strong ones up.

I have notice they mention the teachers first of all the teachers in that school isn't any help. The teachers is the ones who suppose to protect the school kids and help discipline the students. There are different student in the schools who bullied other students and the teachers doesn't do anything to stop it. I heard that this young man and others bullied other children in the school and nothing hasn't been done about it. And yet when that kid stand up for themselves and curse a bad word after the kids who bullied them that kid will get in trouble instead of the others. Every children needs an education, it's up to the young man to make the decision whether he will change yes or no or whether he wants to continue going to school to get a high school diploma. Plus I've heard that no even his own parents can control this young man he doesn't listen to no one .

Hearing the stories coming out of some schools there are many students who are not much different from this one...what BVi needs is a pre Balsum.Ghut entry school and serious Immigration reform.AAAAALWAYS ,,the destruction of basic quality of life on all fronts can be attributed to one group out of a hundred nationalities in the BVI. We need population control via birth control until immigration reform kicks in.

I think it will be all right if I say my goodness, well' My Goodness'. The bible teaches that God has ordained three institutions for the training of our children, they are the HOME, the CHURCH, and the School. What comes from our homes go the our churches, what comes from our churches go to our schools, and what comes from our schools spread through our society. If all of these institutions work in partnership with each other we would not have to deal with such situation. However every thing will not be picture perfect but when the odd situation shows its ugly head we must be prepared to take the right action to stamp it out, knowing fully well that Nature is very careless as to who it allows to be mamas and papas. We should never have to deal with such gruesome violence in our schools but again I must admit the values that were so important to our parents which they instilled in us as children growing up have been thrown through the window.' WHAT WE ARE PREPARED TO TOLARATE THAT IS WHAT WE HAVE LIVE WITH, IT WILL EITHER BE COMES A BLESSING OR A CURES AND IN THIS CAES WE ALL KONW WHAT IT BRINGS'. I don't understand what is going on in the Ministry of Education. A criminal case is pending the Minister and his gang should wait for the out come before thinking of readmitting him back into school. Its obvious this is a young man that is out of control, his presence at school cerates an immediate danger to students and teachers alike. Those who made the decision to readmit him in school should all be charge criminally with the crime of being an accessary after the fact. Who knows the next time some one act on his nerves he might be armed with a gun a knife who knows what is next. This is the right way to go about it The parents of all the students should keep their children at home and all the teachers should refuse to teach until the said student is send home at least pending the outcome of his case. Because the presence of the boy at school creates an unsafe environment for students and teaches alike. It is high time for us to stand up against the things that we believe that are wrong. WE must all have the gusts to do it.
