PETER ISLAND, VI – His unquestionable love, passion and dedication to his family have created an open window in his heart to impact the lives of young people wherever he may be. Today, as a member of the Virgin Islands family, he intends in every way to have his heart shine for all to see.

He is Mr. Shan Mohamed and while he is best known for his professional career in the insurance industry and in the sports arena especially in the field of cricket, those were put aside and the other side of him was made public as he was installed as president of the Rotary Club of Road Town.

The installation ceremony took place at Peter Island Resort last night June 28, 2014 among a full house of Rotarians and special guests. During his brief speech Mohamed said that over the next year, his board plans to ignite passion among Rotarians and embark on meaningful projects that will spread hope, compassion and unity throughout these Virgin Islands like never before.

“Many days when I feel like giving up and I start to question myself as to why I should take this journey, I find hope and inspiration when I look into the bright eyes of my daughter Ariel and my son, Ethan. They represent the hope that I see our community,” noted Mohamed.

But he further went on to say, “Every-time we see a young person in our community heading down the wrong path we should be moved to action as Rotarians. We can no longer sit on the sidelines, point fingers and determine that our youth, especially our young men, don't deserve our help. Hence, this year we will re-double our efforts to assist the next generation of Virgin Islanders realize their full potential.”

According to Mohamed many among last night’s audience were guilty of working individually to build a prosperous life for themselves and for their children, “but we must not lose sight of our obligations to the wider community.”

He further questioned, “It is important for each of us to leave some footprints in the sand. What will we be remembered for when we are called to the great beyond?”

He recognized the work being done by Mr. Craig A. Lake of Follow The Movement (FTM) and Minister Melvin 'Mitch' Turnbull of Project Lion Heart. The idea he said is not to re-invent the wheel, but to use collective resources to achieve maximum results. Turnbull was the guest speaker for the night’s activity.

Contrary to popular thinking Mr Mohamed said the future of these islands is not the Government's fight alone, but a collective effort from the wider community. “Our club has played an important role in this respect and will continue to do so for many years.”

This year the Rotary Club of Road Town intends to increase focus on at-risk youths. “The ever-present beacon, which is the Rotary Club of Road Town, will demonstrate to our young people that there is light at the end of the tunnel; there is a bright future for them with the right support, but more importantly, there are a group of persons within this community that cares and they are the members of the Rotary Club of Road Town. This is my call to action fellow Rotarians,” said Mohamed.

Parallel with the installation of Mr Mohamed was that of his board members including Mr Andrew Emery, Diehdra L. Potter, Elford W. Parsons, Elvis J. Harrigan, Geraldeen Johnson, Gordon U. French, Ishma Edwards, Lavina Liburd, Margaret Penn, Nelcia St. Jean and Ryan Geluk and Immediate Past District Governor (IPDG) Vance Lewis.
