‘Our young men not ready to be hired’ – Radio Show caller
“Earlier in the show you spoke of people calling into [the National Democratic Party’s] radio show complaining that people from the Virgin Islands are not getting work at the hospital. But you missed an important factor,” said a female caller to the show hosted by Doug Wheatley on ZBVI 780 AM.
“Our young men especially are not ready to be hired,” she said. “I spoke to the Human Resource Manager of one of these big hotels here…they had to take a drug test. Every single drug test came back [showing] marijuana in their system or they came back with cocaine,” she said.
According to the woman, she spoke to boat owners who told her that they want to hire local young men but as soon as they hear about a drug test they disappear. She said this is a concern because when the boats go into US Virgin Islands waters and the US Coast Guard carries out testing on sailors, the boat owners are fined heavily if testing reveals drug use.
“Our young men, our young people need to be ready. When people ask me to give them a recommendation to go to the Hospital, I don’t even know what to say about them,” she said.
Host Wheatley told the caller that he appreciated her perspective on the issue, calling it an important one.
“We really must do something about it but they have a responsibility as well,” he said, referring to the young men seeking employment.
“The primary responsibility is theirs’ and the rest of us as a society can help them, but they have to resolve within their own minds that they want to be able to get these jobs and in order to do that they have to be free from [drugs],” said Wheatley.

Your comment shows just why young men (BVIslanders) are not hired. Sadly you missed the point of the article. Many of our young men have no sense of direction and clearly you are one of those who has done whatsoever. They 9our young men)prefer to hang out on the so called block, steal and rob, and smoke weed while the young women enroll themselves at HLSCC.
The young men in this society in which we live needs more than prayers to change their p..s poor attitudes. I believe we should focus of the parents who are failing to bring up their children in the church like many of us did. I was practically forced to go to church every Sunday but I have no regrets about it whatsoever. My Christian upbringing had a lot to do with who I am today as a person.
