ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A caller into the Speak Out BVI show last night January 20, 2015 said that while persons are willing to provide jobs to young Virgin Islanders, some males especially are not ready for the workforce because of their drug use.

“Earlier in the show you spoke of people calling into [the National Democratic Party’s] radio show complaining that people from the Virgin Islands are not getting work at the hospital. But you missed an important factor,” said a female caller to the show hosted by Doug Wheatley on ZBVI 780 AM.

“Our young men especially are not ready to be hired,” she said. “I spoke to the Human Resource Manager of one of these big hotels here…they had to take a drug test. Every single drug test came back [showing] marijuana in their system or they came back with cocaine,” she said.

According to the woman, she spoke to boat owners who told her that they want to hire local young men but as soon as they hear about a drug test they disappear. She said this is a concern because when the boats go into US Virgin Islands waters and the US Coast Guard carries out testing on sailors, the boat owners are fined heavily if testing reveals drug use.

“Our young men, our young people need to be ready. When people ask me to give them a recommendation to go to the Hospital, I don’t even know what to say about them,” she said.

Host Wheatley told the caller that he appreciated her perspective on the issue, calling it an important one.

“We really must do something about it but they have a responsibility as well,” he said, referring to the young men seeking employment.

“The primary responsibility is theirs’ and the rest of us as a society can help them, but they have to resolve within their own minds that they want to be able to get these jobs and in order to do that they have to be free from [drugs],” said Wheatley.

Please, not all our young men smoking. This sounds like a big excuse for not hiring the ones who have some credibility.

Your comment shows just why young men (BVIslanders) are not hired. Sadly you missed the point of the article. Many of our young men have no sense of direction and clearly you are one of those who has done whatsoever. They 9our young men)prefer to hang out on the so called block, steal and rob, and smoke weed while the young women enroll themselves at HLSCC.

The young men in this society in which we live needs more than prayers to change their p..s poor attitudes. I believe we should focus of the parents who are failing to bring up their children in the church like many of us did. I was practically forced to go to church every Sunday but I have no regrets about it whatsoever. My Christian upbringing had a lot to do with who I am today as a person.

I agree that our young men should be free from use of illicit drugs. Tell us whether the workers brought in on work permits or without are tested. Who are we building this country for.it is time to help our young men , educate them and let them know that they have a place in their homeland and not treat them like outcasts. Every country have their own problems, but they do not replace them with others who do not know anything about their country. It is time to give Virgin Islanders a chance.

We face constant power outages, constant water cut offs, the high prices for rent and food, the raised rates for public services like passports and departure taxes i ask what has ndp done to deserve to stay in power. In my opinion nothing the one question we should ask ourselves is are we better off than 4 years ago and in my opinion the answer is no it is much worse. They had an opportunity to fix many of the problems the old regime neglected and they either ignored them to pursue flashy big budget projects that do little to improve the everyday lives of the ordinary people or failed to live up to their promises, the bvi needs a change of leadership to whom I don't know but anything would be better than what we have now, don't vote party vote for those who are actually going to make a difference even if it means a split government

my question; why do we really vote and not just becasue we have the right to vote; the persons we continue voting for does nothing for the average Virgin Islander. stop teaching our people to look-work and teach and help them to establish buisness in their own country. education is the key; we busy building this and busy building that and once these projects are finished most of the jobs goes to documented workers becasue our young men and woman do not have the skills; look at the new hospital our leaders had more that enough time and still have time to make sure some of our people fill post there.....lets be honest some young men and women just do not want to work( mom & dad takes good care of them-so why worry).....education and labor departments need to work with each-other; to many work permits given out; educate our people to fill some of these post...run talk that!!!!!

I think if young people are qualified and impressed their interviewers, but failed their drug tests, they should be hired, but they should be told of their drug test results and that they will be given a chance, let them know that at the end of their probation period a follow up drug test will be conducted, if that's positive, then they only have them selves to blame, but if their drug test comes back negative, its a win, win, they may end up being your best employees.

let me enlighten some of you. Any company has the right to have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drugs whether it is here in the BVI or anyplace in the world. However it is up to the company whether or not they want to take a chance with someone that is using illegal drugs.
