DEVONSHIRE EAST, Bermuda- The Progressive Labour Party has clinched a hugely convincing General Election victory, with Bob Richards the greatest casualty for the One Bermuda Alliance, according to the Royal Gazette today, July 18, 2017.

Thomas Christopher Famous defeated the former finance minister 513 to 419 in Devonshire East to record the biggest shock of the night. Immediately afterwards, Mr Richards announced his retirement from politics.

It is one of seven seats the PLP has taken from the OBA throughout the evening, to complete a 24-12 win.

Wayne Caines won back the Devonshire North West seat for the PLP, defeating incumbent Glen Smith and independent Paula Cox.

Kim Swan reclaimed St George’s West for the PLP, taking 65 per cent of the votes to easily see off Nandi Outerbridge.

Dennis Lister III, David Burch, Renée Ming and Tineé Furbert all claimed victories in seats previously held by the OBA.

Crushing defeats

At a press conference, defeated former premier Michael H. Dunkley acknowledged that his party had suffered some “crushing defeats” on a “tough day”.

“Congratulations to Mr Burt and the PLP. My colleagues and I wish them all the best as they try and move Bermuda forward,” he said.

“We will take time to reflect on the defeat that we took.

“We will reflect on 4½ years when we made real progress. The country is in a better position now but the people of Bermuda want a change.”

Mr Dunkley thanked his colleagues for their efforts and singled out Bob Richards for praise saying the former finance minister had brought the country out of the economic abyss.

2016/ 2017 Elections in the region

Turks & Caicos

Between 2016/ 2017 Elections Opposition parties have scored big election victories in the Caribbean region. In December 2016 the Turks and Caicos saw its Opposition Party the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) taking 15 out of 21 seats defeating the Progressive National Party (PNP) resulting in the first women becoming Premier.

Cayman Islands

In the Election of May 24, 2017 in the Cayman Islands the message for the incumbent administration was clear. The ruling People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) led by Alden M. Mclaughlin Jr., won only 7 seats in the 19 seat Legislative Assembly when 10 seats is needed for a majority meaning the people had spoken.

Independent candidates emerged as the largest group with nine seats. In order to maintain power, the leader of the PPM was forced to form a coalition government with the Cayman Democratic Party (CDP) of W. McKeeva Bush, who had won 3 seats.

Bahamas

In May of this year the Opposition Free National Movement (FNM) in the Bahamas won 35 seats led by Hubert A. Minnis defeating the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) led by now former Prime Minister Perry G. Christie who only won 4 seats.

This is what happens when white man come in a country and try to invoke Colonialism through the back door. Let them try it here in the BVI, we are ready and waiting for them. We shall never be their slaves again. No, never. They think we are asleep, but we are being nudged each day by the mass that fought and lost their lives over these Virgin Islands. Wake up, drowsy ones in the Virgin Islands. We suck a raw egg fuss before we buss.

We want the NDP and any Government to do good. Do not play with what our forefathers worked hard for. We got to leave a good country for our children's children. Respect the efforts of our fallen leaders, man. NDP, if you need to say you erred, say so and the people may forgive you, but do not be making mistakes all the time. You know how many buildings could have been built at the High School? Lavity left a start and our leaders did not follow him. Pick up the ball, please, change for better. If it's one good project a year, finish it and move on. Stop the thiefing money if that's what you are doing. It is only hurting us in the long run.

Dunkley, stop messing with the people of Bermuda. They watched you trying to impose all kinds of laws that was going to displace black Bermudians. The people are speaking, they are saying they are not going backwards. Go siddung with your talk that four years you saw real progress, like there was no progress before. Black people don't want no white man ruling them in this day and era. You don't understand that they are reading and understand what went on in history? Their ballot spoke volumes. Get the message and tell your friends. The people are not returning to days of Mssa again.
