ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- “We must take a step against saving our finances,” Leader of the Opposition Honourable Andrew A. Fahie has said in relation to a planned Motion of No Confidence against Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL).

In a correspondence obtained by this news site, Hon Fahie wrote to the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Congress this evening, July 24, 2017 informing that the Order Paper for the August 1, 2017 House of Assembly (HoA) Sitting is being released tonight and that he submitted a Motion of No confidence in the Minister of Finance that “made the Order Paper after some apparent delays.”

Steps must be taken to ‘save finances’

The Opposition Leader and VIP Chairman said his stance is one that transcends politics.

“We must take a step to save our finances,” he said, adding that the next step is to see if it will get a Second.

“But no matter what we must move forward and we must make these bold steps that will be criticised but are necessary to bring awareness to our people of the poor state of our financial affairs and the need to have this addressed.”

Not a vain effort

Hon Fahie; however, is aware the Motion is not likely to pass but said it is to send a message to the sitting Government and the people of the Virgin Islands that there must be better management of the public’s purse.

“Of course it most likely will not pass but our efforts will not be a failure neither. Our forefathers worked long and hard to build this country and we must not let that go down the drain out of fear to speak up against what is not going right. With God's help we will move forward.”

“They will argue in favour of him but in their hearts they know better and they know he needs to do better. But you my people will not say that I didn't try my best to raise public awareness and strive for better for each of you, better for our Territory's financial management and by extension the best for our country for all and not just a selected few,” Hon Fahie stated in the correspondence to the VIP Congress.

Efforts to get a comment from the Opposition Leader were not successful up to time of publication.

Meanwhile, up to press time, the Order Paper was not available for distribution to the media.

That $7mill to the plane is enough to have had the minister of finance resign.

      NDP in a predicament??..
Take a good look. History will show record breaking accomplishments during their rule while Andrew of the once VIP will show poorly as minister of education and a traitor as leader of.
opposition. The least trusted and nothing accomplished in his district except for the destruction of the shoreline and property devalued.

      a predicament.?

What will this achieve? What is the result Mr. Fahie seeks? It's clear that the Territory's financial affairs are in a sorry state, and that cronyism and corruption are rampant. But so what? Of course it needs to be fixed and fixed urgently but say this no confidence vote leads to recriminations and possibly re-assignment of Dr. Smith out of Finances. Will that change anything? Or, maybe the motion could lead to a snap election. What has VIP done to position itself to succeed? Or, the motion results in mud slinging, offensive language, and everyone goes home hating their enemies, plotting revenge.

Why don't you get your butt up and go March down by the house of assembly for a change. Fahie alone can't do it and those elected members will stay there and play bad politics at your expense, your children and future children expense. Doc is over 70 and will be long gone while the future generation suffers from his mistakes and his loyal blind mice them. They are living their best life right now on your back. As cliche as it may sounds reality reality reality. Either do something or shut it.

It will achieve the perfect opening for a snap election. It will open the true hearts and minds of politicians better than their campaign rhetoric. These two political parties right now have given us insight into which one is for the country and which one is for self via power.

This country too loose somebody must take a stand. They won't listen, well long time john public begging them to take a time out. I don't think this is a willful act that's what the opposition is there for. 7.2 million spent without the public's input made this more evident. The country's infrastructure is in bad shape we should have spent that money there.

Well, meh boi. If Fraser does not second the motion, what would Andrew debate? This is a front for why the one who want to stay on to wuk up wants to do. Sorry, but Hon. Fahie does not understand he is being used as a House slave, running to Massa with news on his own people. Hon, Fahie, at the end of the day, we are one 'black' people and the Governor and UK are not your friend. Be careful what you hoping for in the name of power, and all the other people who are calling for Colonial rule. Wake up, Virgin Islanders, the future of our country needs an injection so our people can be free from the clandestine Colonial shackles.

You see what's happening here. $7.2 million into a bankrupt airline but now they gone to barrow over $9 million for education. Why they didn't put that $7.2 million into education. That is bad financial management.
