ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Affirming his support to the Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) led government and the measures being implemented to protect the Territory against the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), Opposition Leader, Honourable Marlon A. Penn (R8) says the Virgin Islands' (VI) Opposition supports many of the initiatives the government is implementing, noting that the issues are of concern to all.

"As your Loyal Opposition, we are not here to be critical but instead offer our support to the Premier and his government where possible and make additional suggestions which we intend to do today," he said.

Implement more measures - Hon Penn to Premier

The Opposition Leader was at the time hosting a press conference along with Opposition Members, Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3), Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) and Hon Mark H. Vanterpool (R4).

Hon Penn also suggested that the Premier needs to go further with the measures to protect the Territory and follow the best practices of nations who are managing the spread of the virus, "More specifically as it relates to the issues of containment, social distancing, mass gatherings, and economic support and impact and our technological response."

Hon Penn added that Government needs to look at protection for vulnerable groups above the age of 60.

According to the Opposition Leader, the VI must now use models from the US to control the spread of the virus locally, and this he said can happen through a number of factors, including heeding warnings of healthcare officials, social distancing, and restriction of mass gatherings for 60 days.

Closure of schools

"The time is now, to close all public and private schools for the next 30 - 60 days, as we go through this transitional period. The young persons amongst us are being suggested as being the carriers and the risk is too great, to do otherwise," he said.

Hon Penn, on behalf of the Opposition, suggested homeschooling, lesson sharing and virtual classrooms as measures to mitigate the effects of school closure on the learning process.

He said the step of school closure would be a necessary step and made more suggestions for technological responses for the dissemination of information.

According to World Meter, to date there have been 182,400 Novel Coronavirus infections and 7,144 deaths globally.

It’s good to look at other and try to force it on us here in the BVI. I see you looking at the news and trying to implement what they are doing here but let me say the schools are out for 2 weeks with a potential 2 if the problem gets worse. Not 30 to 60 like you recommending.

It would have been better if you can come up with your own ideas because we in the islands are not as prepared for a crisis like this to start acting crazy plus there are no recorded case as yet here in BVI.

I believe you are opposing for the sake of opposing because if you wanted to show unity at a time of crisis you would have sat with the Premier and his government to make your suggestions and present them.

    Stop being fake!

Remember when Orlando needed Fahie during a difficult time to go to London he called him.

This is not the time for the opposition leader to come on air critizing the Premier. Common sense should prevail . He has the opportunity to sit with our leader and let him know how he feels about such matters. The Premier is a man one can communicate with. Using his position as Opposition Leader to make this in a political statement is ugly and sad. This is the time to forget politics and work with the Premier and his team.. Show us the people that you are trying to help.

We need to relax. Closing the schools is not the answer... We need to relax. These kids will never stay at home never. They close the schools in Florida and they kids went to the beach to enjoy their time... Just let's watch, relax pray and take things day by day... For now the Cruiseship ban is the right move... We don't need to over react...

If the school and the daycare closes, then who will look after the kids? Would the government help the parent(s) financially? Obviously if you are a working parent, you cant just call your boss and say you will be staying at home for 2 months. Can you?

Parents needs to work to pay the bills...especially the high cost of RENT.

I do understand the minister's point of view, but at the same time he needs to also talk about ways the government will assist parents, should the schools be closed for such a period of time.

To all of you that are bashing the opp leader for what he’s saying.. he’s right in this sense and you all need to stop.. we tend to be a Reactionary Society instead of putting plans in place to protect all of us.. yes this disease may not show itself in children but they can be carriers and infect others .. what are we suppose to do sit down and wait for it to hit us?.. Faith without works is dead!!.. yes I agree that our government need to look at the financial aspect if our kids are out from daycares and schools and when parents have to stay at home to care for them.. all school and daycares should be close I would say for the next 6 weeks and then we reevaluate the Threat .. all of these issues need to be addressed yes.. the whole world is in panic mode for this virus has brought it to its knees but we have to try to implement best measures to protect our country and the elderly that are most vulnerable and benchmarking from other countries like the US and China and Italy is what we must do in trying to contain this viral spread.. yes the kids will not stay at home but as parents we have to educate our children about how this virus is spread with the hope that they listen .. I am in fully agreement with instituting the new CDC guidelines to contain the spread.. and yes we continue to pray and ask God for Wisdom re: our decision -making.. we are a very small country with X-amount of hosp beds inclusive of ICU rooms and ventilators.. it’s time as a country we stop being so reactionary all the time and be more Proactive .. and yes “Me” I agree with you.
