Opposition admits to having no documented plan for tourism reopening

- blames lack of information for their failure to have a plan to back up their criticisms of Gov't
Although the Virgin Islands Opposition has been vocal with its criticisms of the Fahie administration regarding the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and economy, Opposition Legislator Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) has admitted that the opposition does not have a documented plan. Photo: Facebook/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Although the Virgin Islands Opposition has been loud with criticisms of the Honourable Andrew A. Fahie administration regarding the tourism protocols, calling them onerous, stringent and impractical, Opposition Legislator Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) has admitted that the Opposition does not have a documented plan of its own.

During an Opposition press conference, yesterday, October 28, 2020, a reporter asked, “If the opposition is called to go to the table tomorrow… Do you have a plan for the opening up of the economy for people to come in, do you have a plan ready to be presented?”

Suggestions but no documented plan – Hon Turnbull

Hon Turnbull’s response was that because he is unaware of the financial and economic standing of the country, it will be difficult to formulate the plan.

“Our plan will be, ‘see what can be done’, but the plan for opening up the economy and welcoming back tourists based on what has been proposed, is not one that we will go with,” he said.

The response by the legislator essentially says that while the VI opposition will not back the government’s current re-opening strategy, it is doing so without a solid reference in terms of an Opposition proposed plan.

“We don’t have a documented plan now, when we presented a plan in March we were told that plan was already decided on,” Hon Turnbull said.

Ahead of the response, Opposition Leader Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) had lambasted the Fahie administration for an alleged lack of a COVID-19 plan, noting that he is yet to see Government’s plan for COVID-19 strategy and the economy.

Plans continuously being adjusted – Premier Fahie

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance, Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has continuously said his administration’s COVID-19 plans had been adaptive and ever-changing as the virus situation evolves even as the country prepares to re-open to tourists on December 1, 2020.

“Contrary to the few persons who are trying to purport that the Government has no plans, it is important to note that these plans have been in place since early March and had to be adjusted based on the fluidity of COVID-19 not only in the BVI, but throughout the world,” Hon Fahie said in a statement released on Monday, October 26, 2020.

Many are now seeing the VI Opposition as hypocritical and mischievous, to accuse the government of allegedly lacking a plan for the reopening of tourism when the Opposition themselves have failed to formulate one.

Before you start to criticisie, U must first have a aolution, or a suggestion, or a different way of your own ready to put on the table.. .However, I can understand the Opposition difficulty to having a counter - plan because they were ambush and shut out by the government so they didn't know what the government plan contained... Im not defending them, they still need to say what changes they want to see to the govt plan.

Marlon Penn & Mitch Turnbull... two empty barrels making wasted noise. FYI, whenever you are opposing a document or a situation... you should have the supporting argument to back up your claim...not just criticize because it’s easy. Come to the table always ready to present at least one solution. You have continued saying this or that will not work but has nothing to put forward that will work. But then again... why would I expect anything better from you too, you simply lack the ability to have a higher level of thought process.

It is not the opposition job to produce the solution, that is what all the consultants and government people are meant to do. How could they if the current administration would not involve them?
This is ridiculous and the people suffer.

I think it’s vital that they should open up the country let people come in. All we have to do is follow the protocol for COVID 19 it’s a virus it wouldn’t kill unless you don’t go get the treatment for the virus. Open up the place boss

None of them have a working copy of Microsoft Word they know how to use. People feel shame admitting they're functionally illiterate. It's hard to coordinate document creation over WhatsApp.

The opposition's role is not just to oppose but they are also to propose. For far too long opposition parties in the Caribbean just oppose for opposing sake but have not taken on the role of proposing and this is killing Caribbean people and our development. It is not the government who will benefit from a good plan, it is the people so lets do more proposing. On the other, hand the plan of the Government is absurd even to the simplest of layman with a little common sense and if this is the best our consultants can do then God help us. There is always some level of risk involved once you decide to open the border, and you have to open the border because the economy depends on Tourism. Here is my proposal. (1) Tourist upload their Covid test results and answer online questionnaire for entry approval ( Test not more than 6days from arrival date). Airline are mandated to report any Covid like symptom displayed during flight (all airlines already have a temperature check protocol) (2) Temperature check and health screening on arrival inclusive of Covid test. (3) Masks are mandatory. (4) Tourist quarantine in their hotel for 4 days until results are available. Base on results, decision to continue secured quarantine or enjoy vacation. People are not going to pay to come on a vacation to be quarantine but they recognize that under the circumstance, a reasonable quarantine period is necessary. Coupled with this there must be proper training of Taxi operators, hotel staff and service providers. Hotels and other service providers must also have the proper protocols in place to minimize transmission on their properties. Keep it simple and strategic and then promote your protocol to locals and tourist alike while reminding them of the consequences of non-compliant.

The money wasted on paying for the criminal tracking system ( which absolutely will not work ) should have been spent on a testing system for arrivals than can deliver results with in an hour. Such systems exist. Worst case would be a test on arrival with results within 24 hours and restricted movement in approved location until the results. That is more than most countries are demanding but would probably not kill off tourism the way the present plan absolutely will and would provide a high level of safety.

I agree. Why did we get a criminal tracking system from Jamaca? Who was consulted? And why are our covid tests the most expensive in the Caribbean?

Their job isn't too have a plan. That is the government job! They can and should have ideas to help the government side of government includes them in the planning. Their job is to oppose and keep the government in check. Opposition not having a written reopening plan is not an indictment against the Opposition.

Is it a competition? Not to worry. It's pretty clear that the government hasn't got a plan either.

Exactly. Their job is to oppose but they could have a ruff draft in Microsoft words to let the house see that their idea is a better one for our country.
