ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A clarion call has been made to local consumers, Government and the private sector to have a dialogue on the "very serious" issue of online stores like Amazon competing with local stores.

Speaking on the radio programme Umoja, on ZBVI 780 AM on Thursday August 25, 2016, retired civil servant and businessman John Samuel said several local business owners have been raising the issue; and although consumers are very price conscious, there is a social responsibility that comes with being a consumer.

“I had a discussion with other business operators and even online we should be careful about our economy and we also have to be careful as consumers,” he said.

“The online business front is sort of removing the borders from commerce and small economies can suffer tremendously from that because small retail fronts cannot compete with online commerce. Over time they will disappear!”

Samuel pointed out that while consumers may argue that they got the product much cheaper, in the next 15 years the government will not collect the taxes because there are no businesses and young people will not be able to secure jobs.

“I’m not sure if we come to realise how much of a challenge this can create for us, all we know is we can get it cheaper.”

Matter must be addressed urgently

Host of the show, Cromwell Smith aka Enju Enka also added his voice to the matter, saying it is also of “tremendous concern” to him as well.

“What concerns me most is our local people, management, and Government are not sitting down together to deal with that particular issue. They need to have a conference to defend our economy against this fight. Because our lives depend on this, it is a very serious matter.”

He said attention must be given to this matter right away.

“One of the avenues that I think needs to be discussed is that government must find a way to enable the local retailer to compete with the online businesses.”

In addition, the two pointed out that when assistance is needed in one form or the other, the very same local stores are the ones they come to and not the online stores like Amazon and even neighbouring St Thomas, US Virgin Islands where persons prefer to shop.

If the local businesses, and I mean businesses in the BVI not just ones owned by Belongers, started providing better service and not rip off prices, then I might be less likely to go to STT.
      • I shop overseas becasue it is cheaper and the service is better (27/08/2016, 16:48) Like (74) Dislike (4) Reply
However, I also shop at Riteway for some of my food because I can't bring it in from overseas all the time. However, I really really resent the high prices that I have to pay there.

The only exception is Clarence Thomas Ltd - Michael Thomas manages to sell items at the same cost or sometimes lower than Home Depot in STT. The service is great. I hope he branches out into food. Perhaps he could also offer lessons to our other rip off locally and foreign owned BVI businesses.

Clarence Thomas is OK, but their tool prices are not. Easy to justify a trip to Home Depot in St. Thomas to pay less than 50% of their prices. That said, the problem is that BVI stores try to make their money on (high) mark-ups instead of trying to do so on inventory turnover.

all of this time I seriously thought that i lived in a relatively free society: i was of the opinion that i have to right to spend my money where, when and how I choose; it is so amazing when these store owners was making money no one heard from them: simply as an example: i wanted some head gasket treatment so I purchased 2 bottles from a local store for USD 45.00 each: that very same product on amazon for less that 20.00 each bottle but i needed that product urgently so i made the purchase locally: why is this government seeking to impose all these communistic practices in the territory(the fight against the press, mandatory insurance and now seeking to telling us where to shop) for many many years the people of this territory shopped abroad for better bargains and better quality products; sometimes you go to the local shops to make a simple purchase and they have to order the item then charges you twice as much for it; offer better rates or restructure your business because business is a risk and you cant look to government to impose sanctions on its people to benifit your business.....my question: how can the government subserdize a foreign airline while small businesses in this territory are suffering(just a question)

I purchased a refrigerator on island because it was easier and cheaper than to purchase on line and then get it shipped over. There are good uses and bad uses of the internet. If there was more variety in the stores, this wouldn't be an issue.

Ok John then you alone must shop online and mark up to where we cannot afford? Guess what HM Customs rakes in duties and the local shipping agents make a killing and also hire persons in the economy. Why don't you get with the times and innovate your business and offer online sales or concierge buying for customers? I am sure if you bulk purchase online you can still offer better prices to online purchasers. Instead we here trying to implement a Communist Marxist regime so the few can stay rich on the backs of the consumers. Why you can't innovate if you see a need where customers come to you after their online purchases for service repairs etc. I smell business opportunity. I recently met a young man who is representing products locally. Some he imports and sells others he sells online as an affiliate where you can purchase online and ship to your own US box and import yourself. You dinosaurs need to innovate instead of trying to instill communism and Marxism here. Edju Enka best go sit down and go back to school and learn a proper trade instead of chatting piss

It is criminal that something costing $15 landed in the Territory should be sold for over $100. Case in point check the price online for an automatic shift cable for your car. You will find an OEM replacement for under $20. Go to the local stealership and you will find it for sale for over $200 for the same oem replacement not even genuine. Is that the bullspit we are promoting? Check the prices at CarQuest you will find they are at or around the same price as importing yourself. Make the bvi a duty free port and just add a sale tax and watch the economy just start booming this important duty is a big hold back to our economy we need to go for volume sale vs these big Mark up which some just can't avoid because of the import duty and then let us get england to lobby on our behalf to United States to recognize the virgin islands as domestic for shipping purposes only base on our strong ties with the usvi this will significantly reduce the shipping cost to the Virgin Islands as right now a 20 ft container from Miami to st thomas is 1800 to 2000 but to tortola it's 3500 to 4000 so that's 1500 to 2000 that businesses have to spread across their products even before they start to factor in other expenses then profit so it's nearly impossible to complete in prices with the usvi,Puerto Rico or online businesses

One of their biggest problem you purchased something from a store its not good you cannot get a cash refund and you are forced to take something you dont want. Next thing you have been working for ten years straight same business not a raise in salary no increments every week you go shopping the prices gone up not by a dollar or two so big that you can see it slapping you down so tell me what can one do but to go where your money cant stretch and get good customer service where you can return your stuff and get your item changed or cash refund without a hassel someone help me here is there any where in the BVI this service is offered? For eg i needed a back light for my car it cost $190plus from a dealer here i went on ebay and got a pair for less than $190 so you see they can do so much better here. Finally where do they shop? Overseas too so when you people are forceing people to shop locally remember you shop the same like us overseas

We do try to shop local but when you done pay your bills and barely have any money left what are we suppose to do. For example, Walmart ships over $50.00 for free to St. Thomas, now you have an order for $200.00, pay duty of $30.00 that means you actually spent $230.00. Now let's do the maths, those stuff will cost you over $300.00 locally for smaller quantity, what should you do. Rite way is a one off for me, One mart yea, Bobbies yea.
So when The Haves want to come tell The Haves Not to shop local tell them to give us value for our dollar and we will or Walmart, Amazon and the others will continue to be our best friends. I just spent $36.00 for a part on Amazon and they wanted to charge me over $100.00. Wow

We don't need to have a discussion about online stores like Amazon. We need to have discussions with small business owners in the BVI who need to step up their product and their service. I have no problem supporting local business and I do but I only support a few because they understand service and meeting my needs. You can't beat the online market. Not even in America can the online market be beat. But you can sell a product well enough to keep customers coming back.

Well John, look at this as an opportunity and start a courier, shipping or brokerage company. Then you can try to jack up the import fees as much as you want. So that when this type of greed drives you out of business you can't say it is because people are not buying local services.

The problem here is that business seems to do no market research so they can get an idea of what people want. They bring in what they feeling like selling and not what the consumer is looking for. Many time I order, not because it is cheaper online, but because I simple can’t find a lot of what I am looking for here.

We depend to greatly on business from within these figurative four walls, and I think that's why BVI businesses suffer. Export your Services and products! Let's get creative! Lets innovate!

The prices in the BVI are exorbitant. How can you expect us to shop locally when we can find what we want online, and at times with better quality, for less money? Instead of trying to stifle us and force us to shop locally by increasing the customs and tax fees we pay when shipping things in, try regulating prices with the VI. These shop owners are basically ripping us off. You can make a profit without emptying our pockets.

What the businesses in the BVI should do is have online websites for their products as well. And see it they can compete with overseas. This is the 21st century and at least the business, such as Mr. Samuel should know that people hardly wants to be hassled by being in stores but to shop online at their own convenience. Don't get me wrong there is nothing more great than shopping in stores. Mr. Samuel please get with the program and other local businesses.

Maybe if the stores here got some sort of online store where one could check out prices and even buy online and just go to the store for pick up, that would be a bit enticing. Maybe even delivery of goods in feasible areas. It could even help stores out since the technology can keep track of inventory and monitor trends so they know just what to order, how much and when. Rite Way in particular is always closing for inventory, this could help them save time and money. Hey, stores can even collaborate to have one website where customers can compare prices on items sold in multiple store. Also stores can initiate a coupon system instead of selling things for cheap (i.e there normal price) when they're expired or about to be (you know what store I'm talking about).

And can somebody please tell Rite Way to stop hiking up prices when an item gets popular? If I buy a biscuit today that costs $2 and the biscuit suddenly become popular by Friday the same biscuit costs $10. And then nobody wants to buy them so they stay on the shelves and spoil. I mean I'm a supporter of capitalism and businesses have a right to make a profit but d@mn! What's next? Should I put my blood type on my credit card so you can know what type you're getting when you take it? Should I also tell you which arm, leg and kidney is my favourite so you can go with those too? Or maybe you'll just like to have first born daughter?

I bought a pair of sneekers from an overseas store. after wearing them they burned my feet. Contacted the outlet to find out if they had a larger size. they told me yes and that i should return the purchased ones for exchange. You heard me right. I thought it was a joke so i caught the next bus. With receipt in hand they graciously accepted the pair i already wore and gave me a similar pair with a larger size. by the way I did try them on before leaving the store where I made sure to walk in them but on the road was very different.
