Omar W. Hodge undergoes surgery in Florida

- The former Legislator and government Minister is reportedly recovering well
March 15th, 2012 | Tags: hospitalised surgery Omar W. Hodge recovering
Mr. Hodge is reported to have had surgery recently at a Florida hospital. He has been released and recovering and is said to be in good spirits.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Former Minister for Natural Resources and Labour and representative for the 6th district Omar Wallace Hodge is reportedly recovering after surgery in Florida, USA.

The nature of his medical surgery has not been released to the public, but persons close to the situation told this news site that the former Minister is out of the hospital and recovering well in Florida and is expected to experience a full and stable recovery.

It remains unclear when the former politician affectionately known as the “People’s man” will return to the Virgin Islands (VI).

Mr. Hodge suffered a major loss in the 2011 VI General Elections after serving in Parliament for 32 years (1979-2011). Hodge, a Virgin Islands Party (VIP) candidate, was defeated for another term by new comer under the National Democratic Party banner Alvera Maduro-Caines; 612 or 61.4 % in convincing fashion to Hodge’s 385 or 38.6 % of votes cast, the biggest up-set of last year’s elections.

Hodge’s Political Career

The former legislator Omar Wallace Hodge is the seventh of seven children. He was born on February 2, 1942 to Lucy Ann Augusta-Maduro of Baughers Bay and Amos Hodge of Free Bottom, Tortola and received his education in the Virgin Islands and later worked at the Department of Agriculture.

His love for the land has influenced many of the bold decisions which he made during his political career. Mr. Hodge has had a varied and challenging career as a businessman which has included restaurant and supermarket ownership, landscaping and real estate development.

During his political career he was credited with bringing an end to the one hundred and twenty eight year old issue of the Anegada lands disputes. As the then Minister for Natural Resources Hodge, he had appointed the Anegada Lands Commission, which with his support and the people’s trust, had been able to bring about an agreeable settlement. He along with his appointed ad hoc advisory committee were also able to accomplish similar goals regarding Horse Path property in making it available to local residents.

Omar Hodge had championed the expatriate’s right to the comfort and peace of mind of Belonger status, after they have worked and lived in the Virgin Islands for many years. He has spoken out against them being sexually harassed while trying to obtain a work permit and also pregnant expatriate women being sent out of the country to bear their children.

He is also best known for breaking the mace during the 10th Sitting of the Legislative Council. Some has regarded this as his clearly demonstrated zeal and uncompromising attitude towards his quest for justice, the right to speak out for good and the right to live.

Days after he and his VIP lost the 2011 elections, Mr. Hodge told Virgin Islands News Online that he will retire from active politics, but will set up a foundation to still offer help to the needy.

The Staff, Management and Board of Directors of Virgin Islands News Online wish Mr. Hodge a speedy recovery.

You really full of bull!!! Those people have lives and we must respect their privacy at times. Because you give them a vote dont mean you have a right to invade their privacy at anytime. She and the other elected officials has an office and I would suggest some of you go there. Tell me, how many of you were able to go to Omar residence at any given time? None but you all want to be getting down on this woman because her husband run someone? Struppsss..some of you all need to get a life. If you have a tooth ache, you call your rep. If your water or light get cut, you call your rep. If you aint have no food, you call your rep. What are our reps? slaves and a personal bank to us because we voted for them? Some of you have family memebers you can call on for help. What about praying, no, like we forget who is the giver of all things. Our reps cannot solve all of our problems we create for ourselves. I applaud this lady but I feel for her with what she has to endure with some of you selfish and greedy people.

I'm glad to hear Mr. Hodge is recovering well. He really needed his time for himself. Now imagine if VIP were elected. Mr. Oneal is not well, Mr. Hodge is not well. I wonder why their families and supporters never urged them to rest and give up this stressful politics thing. The 'critics' talk about old people coming back to work but what about old politicians not giving the young a chance. that's how ndp won, they gave the young people a chance and people rewarded them for it. Imagine the chaos if ralph and omar were elected, my goodness. I heard Mr. Christopher has health issues as well.

There's no such thing as voice cancer a$$wipe! The NDP has plenty of youngsters to back them up in the event that any of the older ones have to step aside due to health issues. Can we say that about VIP? NO succession planning, just pure fighting! NDP got youth like peas to chose from, trust i and i.

The only wrong with VIP is that they don't like to call out people and make them look bad. plenty young people there with them who can take over...time longer than twine.

SICKNESS IS NO JOKE. Stop making fun with it. We all have some sort of sickness and when it is our turn it will tell on us. Today for me tomorrow you, remember today you are here and today you could be gone. We leave our homes each day healthy as hell some of us but still not sure if we will return none-the-less live to see another day.

So sad that a man's health problems would be taken so jokingly. It's always sad when any member of any party is ill. Regardless of which side of the P, we alll should pray for their recovery.
