ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – One resident is of the belief that residents who don’t vote should keep their ‘mouths shut for four years’ since they cannot be part of the process.

“They say they’re not voting so I say keep your mouth shut for four years. If you don’t have nothing to say for four years whether the government is running good or bad,” the caller said on the Speak Out BVI show aired on May 20, 2014.

He added that residents who decline to vote for politicians because all of them are corrupt should vote for the least of the corrupt lot.

The resident said millions of people around the world have been deprived of the right of voting and many elections have also been one by a margin of one vote, therefore any one vote could make a difference.

“You are not part of the process if the government is running good or bad so keep your mouth shut,” the caller advised.

VIP elections very important for the VI

Meanwhile, host Douglas Wheatley underscored the importance of the upcoming internal elections of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), describing it as very important for the Territory.

“The Virgin Islands Party has been one of the major parties in this country, a major force to begin with, certainly in the past.”

The host added that the demise of the VIP would be quite a thing if that were to happen. “Everyone is waiting with bated breath to hear the outcome of the elections in the VIP with respect to the chairman and president,” Wheatley stated.

He further noted that the party’s elections will mean a lot in terms of the local polity and upcoming general elections which are constitutionally due in 2015.

Anyone that pays taxes has a right to be heard whether they can vote or not.

And to add to that. There are too many of you here sucking the land dry and still wanting to have a say in government. Go home and talk.

Non voters (work permit & residency) are here by privilege.....not by right! When you get your Belongers or Citizenship then you can talk and have a SAY! Nonsense bout paying taxes! How much taxes half of these nationalities (excluding Cayman & Bahamas) pay at home? Much more than the 8% income tax here in BVI. Set of ungrateful you know what!

I what the resident is saying, they didn't say people who cannot vote, or not eligible to vote, they are saying people who "DON'T VOTE", most of us don't read and understand,i totally agree with that resident, if you saying that you aint voting, then why complain about government this and that, when you had the opportunity to make a difference, i totally agree, shut the hell up for four years because you could have caused change and you didn't so hush.

As long as I am paying my taxes, I have a right to say what I want regardless if I went to the polls or not. My taxes help to run this damn country!!!!!

some of those ex-pats who can't vote have vast experience when it comes to politics. They have seen the potential consequences of not voting or not speaking up. Why do you want to re-invent the wheel every time there is a political turn-over? Learn from mistakes and vote for the least evil. THEN hold them accountable. People need to pay attention to all political issues, meetings, decisions, attend public meetings all over the island- and only they (and investigative journalism) can head corruption off at the pass. People run a democracy, not the other way around. People are not to be "managed", politicians are to be watched.

So that is about 65% of the population. To call the BVI a democracy is an absolute farce and an insult to the thousands who pay tax but will never see a vote. THE BVI IS NOT A DEMOCRACY.

More thought should have been made about the current situation before that statement was made public.
