Non-Virgin Islander tipped by NDP to head London Office

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Following the ousting by the Government of the day of the Virgin Islands Ambassador to London and the European Union, Mr E. Benito Wheatley, by failing to renew his contract, senior National Democratic Party (NDP) sources have told our newsroom that the Dr D. Orlando Smith led Administration is for the first time considering placing a non-national to the London office post.

In press releases following a story first broken by our newsroom in March of 2018, both Mr Wheatley and the Smith-Government denied that he was ousted and in a statement, Mr Wheatley claimed he had decided to move on, and it was his decision not to renew his contract.

Mr Wheatley also stated that he was “highly confident that a BVIslander will be identified for the position, who will continue the important diplomatic work of this office and lead its excellent staff".

However, that may not be the case according to senior NDP sources. In a phone call over the weekend to our newsroom to inquire about the lack of updates of our site, one source who is familiar with the matter said, “They have floated a name for consideration some ‘Susan’ but backbenchers will not let this one fly…”

The source did not give any more details on the matter but said while no decision has been made “the lady with the power wants her," while our source did not name or elaborate on who the "lady with the power is".

A few weeks ago during the debate for the Recovery Bill, Minister for Communications and Works, Hon Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) praise Ambassador Wheatley, for his work in the London office and his connections in getting high profile meetings set up.

Skelton-Cline blast government

On his popular radio show Honestly Speaking two weeks ago Claude O. Skelton-Cline, former Managing Director of BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) and social commentator alleged on live radio said, “You can count on this NDP Government to place everyone else ahead of Virgin Islanders and I’m calling on the Backbenchers, as I have lost all confidence in the Cabinet Ministers to defend and promote Virgin Islanders, to raise the question and stand up to their own government, for and on behalf of the people who elected them and not allow this to happen.”

Mr Skelton-Cline the once NDP candidate in the 2011 elections further warned the people of the Virgin Islands that "this is no time to sleep and make believe these things are not happening. We are losing our country under this NDP Government".

The radio commentator announced last week that after backing the Smith-led Administration in the 2011 and 2015 general elections he will not support them in the 2019 bid to retain power. The former Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority whose own contract was not renewed by this government stated on his radio show, “Be Watchful, It is time to watch, pray and fight in defence of our people and the land of our birth. We cannot and must not sit fearfully and quietly by as lambs being led to the slaughter.”

In his statement last month, outgoing London Office boss, Mr Wheatley said in an exclusive interview with our newsroom that “The public can rest assured that I will continue to serve the territory faithfully until a successor is appointed in the weeks ahead.”

A Government spokeswoman, Desiree Smith, when asked, said she was “not aware at the time of a new London Office Head.”

    Regardless of one’s political persuasion (NDP, VIP, PEP, independent), we can all agree that there are nuff qualified, available and willing Virgin Islanders that can effectively manned/managed the territory’s UK office, serving as roving ambassador for UK/EU, can we not? Where is the national pride? Are Virgin Islanders so “less” that they lacked the knowledge, skill and ability to effectively function as ambassador to UK? We all know that this is pure nonsense. Should a non Virgin Islander be appointed as ambassador to UK/UK? No. Whose bone head idea was this? This is dissing of Virgin Islanders. It is our fault. Due to political patronage, we lacked the courage to call a spade a spade. Instead, we want to call it a diamond or heart. We reap what we sow. Here is a news flash my fellow Virgin Islanders. You have the power, not the politicians or their cronies or de facto leaders. Stop yielding your power to politicians; they are just your elected reps in the HOA. Furthermore, if a non Virgin Islander is appointed, this should be the red line, the bitter end and cause for constitutional and peaceful change. Stop the self hatred. Get up, stand up and be proud.

    What is the real deal with E. Benito Wheatley? By all accounts, he did and is doing a superb job in London serving as UK/EU ambassador; he is fired up about his job. Did the NDP deliberately let his contract lapsed? Did it frustrated and dissed him enough that he had no choice but to leave. Chez som bred, if cuz is treated dis way, well meh boi others should cautiously mind their P’s ad Q’s.

    Until we as VIslanders embrace who we are as a people, we must accept that there is absolutely nothing that will change. If we intend to become impactful in our present and future direction as a people, we must change our thinking and perceptions that ultimately change the way we see ourselves.

    In the B.I.B.L.E- Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, there are two (2) Earthly creatures that the creator identified with: The first is the Eagle and the second- is the LION.

    If we are to become the guardians of our country and for generations to come, we must develop certain types of attitudes without becoming xenophobic; and as such, embrace a more ethno-relative approach to our thinking.

    With that said, all energy and efforts should be exhausted to give our qualified people the first opportunity to fill these positions of leadership in our country before expanding such opportunities elsewhere. This becomes only basic COMMONSENSE for any Nation- Great or Small towards the positive progression of any country and its people.

    For not making this too much of a long post, we will express our critical thinking of the LION (although both the Eagle and the Lion are the Kings of their Domains- We must become avid readers and researchers if we wish to learn from our very religious foundation.

    Let’s understand this- the LION is not the smartest (the snake is the smartest), nor the most intelligent leader in the jungle; the LION is not the strongest, nor the tallest, the heaviest, nor most forceful animal in the jungle - the giraffe is the tallest; the elephant is the smartest and heaviest, and the rhino is the most forceful. But the LION has what we as VIslanders have, and that is- “The Spirit of the LION.” The ATTITUDE to PERSEVERANCE under any circumstance when given the opportunity- as exhibited by Mr Benito Wheatley in his gracious exhibition of global diplomacy.

    We came from nothing to where we are today- where people from around the world want to become a part of what we have created up to this point in our story. We must not lose this now because of weak leadership.
    In the last two (2) years of posting, we have supported such VIsanders as: Honourable Melvin “Mitch” Turnbull, Honourable Andrew Fahie, Honourable Frazer, Dr. Carl Dawson, Mr. Julian Willock, Honourable Julian Fraser, Honourable Ronnie Skelton, Honourable Myron Walwyn, Alvera Maduro-Caines, Honourable Marlon Penn, Pastor John Cline, Ms. Sharie Decastro; Mrs. Sonia Brewley-Webster; Ms. Nina O’Neal, Mr. Colin O’Neal, Joseph Smith, Dr. Angel Smith, Mr. Claude Skelton-Cline; Ms. Shaina Smith, Vincent Wheatley, Ms. Elise Donovan, Mrs. Luce Hodge, and others.

    Our contributions, for and against, are to make our people think- just as: E. Leonard. Political Observer (PO), Socrates, Diplomat, Albion, Dickson Igwe, Alred Frett, Wize up, and others. According to Political Observer (PO), interpreted in our own words- ’let us no fall off the cliff like buffaloes without challenging the present direction and leadership of our country.”

    The list of candidates has been present. Why? Because they have exhibited a unique and distinctive attitude of leadership (the spirit of the lion)- that which is most necessary today to move our country forward.

    However, (IOM) Honorable Andrew Fahie, has distinguished himself as the most potential PREMIER because he has proven himself as that fearless LION of the PACT against all odds by exhibited FEARLESSNESS against all other predators; and as a result- has garnered the RESPECT of the PEOPLE.

    “SOLUTIONS WILL COME FROM THE PEOPLE.” It just takes a leader who embraces the power of active listening. The PUBLIC TOO- should have aa ACTIVE say in the direction of OUR COUNTRY. THE NEXT LEADERS MUST BE OPENED TO PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT.

    What we must DEMAND TODAY- “IS RESPECT AS A PEOPLE. We Must KNOW- when it is time to LEAD. We must embrace “THE SPIRIT OF THE LION” right now and this is what the candidates we have presented are exhibiting- that which makes them different from the average followers.

    “AS THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS THEY MUST STAND OUT AND NOT FIT-IN TO THE NORM.”

    HONOURABLE Melvin “MITCH” Turnbull is a perfect example of this standard. This young man has the natural ability to lead. “We may call it arrogance or immaturity, but it is a certain mindset based on his environment and how he thinks about his long-term vision and belief system. His parents have done a good job of nurturing his mind for future leadership. His attitude is based on ongoing learning. His foundation is, however, solid. His present risk of going against the grain will prove significant in his future “ALTITUDE”.

    FROM A BIBLE VERSE OF LEADERSHIP- PLEASE READ IN FULL- Ephesians 3:20. ‘`Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us’’

    If we shut them down and shut them out right now because of their past, we are doing our country an injustice. Whether you embrace them or not, they are some of the guardians of our present and future progress because they view our circumstances differently from the status-quo.

    “We must challenge the status-quo for a different outcome to our present and future outcomes.”

    The young man Kyron McMaster is a perfect example of our present and future potentials; we should not and must not close the gates to those potentials and bright possibilities. This is the time to dig deep and rediscover what we would like to recreate as a people. As the saying goes- “NO MAN IS AN ISLAND.”

    “An army of sheep lead by a LION will always defeat a group of lions led by an army of sheep.” How we interpret our present circumstances and the future of Our Virgin Islands will certainly be determined by our next upcoming election in our country.

    Take heed and think thoroughly about our next upcoming election our people.

      We are not going in no hands of the Queen with you. It appears you did not read the same history books I read. If you know what they did to those they colonized, you think that a better educated bunch will sit back and go in that path again? Let Britain stay up their and squirm between the Muslims who giving them a run for their country and let them feel how it feels to be mistreated by a particular group. You may send her victorious, and call her happy and glorious with the ill gotten wealth of the Africans and those she colonized, but please, NEVER LONG TO REIGN OVER US. Wheel and come again. The British may try a ting, you know, but when the spirit of H.L., Noel Lloyd, Lindy, Gardo, Mongooto, Jump, Wernicko and Lou Harrigan start to turn in this place, it is revolution time and we bwois will show what we are made of -- melinated children of the sun shall never die. We may appear to be sleeping, but we are not sleeping on our destiny.

    Island man government? How sad....comments like this is xenophobic and segregating. When most BVI people can trace their roots back to certain down island places . Plus the "island people" word is so outdated....we are islands also...even smaller than them. If we went independant we would be way worst off than them. People who say stupid stuff like this makes me sad to be from the BVI. Irma did'nt humble people I see.

      Ok. Yes, E. Benito Wheatley is the grandson of Dorothy “Dot” Davies-Wheatley and sister of Ms. Eldra Davies-Smith, the Premier’s Mother. Virgin Islanders are lambasted daily for being unqualified for jobs and used born here to get jobs. Well, here we have a highly qualified Virgin Islander who has performed superbly as the UK/EU ambassador but is allegedly being shown the door. The treatment of Benito is similar to the treatment received by Guy Hill, former acting Chief Immigration Officer. Guy was highly qualified for the CIO, having the the training, education, experience and demonstrated experience/performance, but was frustrated out the door due to politics. Tribal politics and political patronage is ruining the BVI. Throw a tinge of self hatred, bad mindedness and you got a royal mess. The BVI is dangling precariously off the social, cultural, political and economic cliff. And needs to be urgently rescued. On the current course it will hard aground.
