ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Joe Chapman overcame a spirited challenge from Jules Snagg to win the 2012 OECS Squash Championship in straight games on Friday May 25, 2012 at the Tortola Sports Club.

Chapman, back in front of his home crowd after Graduating from Rochester University and turning Professional, was in a determined mood and had to be at his best to secure the Men’s Title from Snagg, St Vincent’s number one ranked player.

“In the first game I was a little bit apprehensive having just got back to the BVI and nervous for the match,” commented Chapman, who also won the event in 2010 and 2011.

The first game reached 7-7 and then Snagg made two unforced errors to give Chapman game point and he didn’t need a second invitation in taking the game 11-7.

“The momentum shifted after that,” said Chapman. “I was able to talk to my Coach Joe Kniepp and he settled any remaining nerves I had.”

Chapman went on to overpower his opponent in the second game showing the partisan crowd his all court agility in winning 11-2.

The third and final game also went comfortably to Joe, 11-5.

“To be fair I thought I had greater speed and experience than Snagg, he is a good player, but once I got control of the “T” and began to move him out of position, I knew I would win.”

Snagg agreed with the assessment adding that he probably tried too many match winners from difficult positions. He also congratulated Chapman and wished he had some of the same opportunities that Chapman has had.

“I’ve been without a coach for 18 months,” he said. “It is hard to get financing in St Vincent and the overall level of Squash is not as competitive as it needs to be if I’m to be able to match players like Joe. I will be back though and hopefully go one better next time!”

Chapman, who felt his third win was his best, has already turned Professional after a highly successful University stint and won two rounds in his first Tournament in Rochester. “Always winning at home is great, so this is the most satisfying of my three titles,” he noted.

Chapman, who is sponsored by both Appleby and Nagico, has a definite goal of reaching the top 100 in his squash career and has a pathway all mapped out.

“There is a Pro-Am here next month,” he said. “then I’m off to Holland to play. I hope to play in around 12 tournaments a year and win as many rounds as possible to climb the rankings.”

Chapman is also passionate about representing the Territory and also hopes to bring home a Championship or two from either the CAC’s, the Pan Ams or Commonwealth Games.

Joe’s march to the finals included straight games, 3-0, victory over Neviile Sorrentino.

Daniela Schumann, also representing the BVI, took the Women’s trophy, also in convincing style from St Lucia’s number one ranked player, Amber Glasgow, 11-0, 11-3, 11-2.
