ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture Dr Marcia Potter said that while she has received no reports of mold in the main Public Library on Fleming Street she acknowledged that the air conditioning has been down.

The library has been closed since around May 17, 2016, due to what our sources told us was mold in addition to a broken air conditioning system.

We had for an earlier story published yesterday May 30, 2016 sought a comment from Dr Potter as to the reasons for the library’s closure and she had promised to get back to us.

Speaking through her Information Officer April T. Glasgow yesterday, Dr Potter said, “yes there have been complications with the air conditioning unit and we are working assiduously to replace that system.”

She continued, “It is not as simple as just buying a new unit and putting it in. We have to replace the entire system and that will mean changes to the vents. But we are working with people right now to get that done.”

It is reported that many of the workers of the library for years have been complaining about the building making them sick and have from time to time come forward with medical certificates to confirm their ailments. In addition, some have complained that the mold in the building is a challenge as it causing further issues to their health.

A number of the staff members have reportedly gotten medical papers to show their different ailments they link to the working conditions at the Library building, while the Library remains closed.

On the malfunctioning air conditioning unit, one employee told our newsroom on condition on anonymity that “a few days after the AC went down workers were willing to come to work, however, the heat was too much to take, as many of the widows could not open.”

Meanwhile, the building that houses the library in Road Town belongs to the Malone's family. Local businessman Carvin Malone confirmed this information to Virgin Islands News Online but noted that it is not the family's responsibility to address the issue of the AC unit as it was installed by government.

I thought the reason for the library moving was because of structural problems in the building??? Now you want to fix the AC as opposed to moving the department? Oh, okay!!!

The library NEED to be relocated URGENTLY! Our government is a reactive one and not proactive...it will take a major disaster to happen in that building before they do something about it

I agree! The government can find money for everything else BUT the relocation of the library. SMH

I don't like to wish any one ill, but you see these top dogs who consistently lies about moldy working conditions, they need to get a good dose that will lick them down, then they will believe the plight of others. But, I hope they all know that time is longer than twine. They all have kids and one day, those same kids will pay for the sins of their parents, if the parents don't reap the fruits of their seeds they plant today.

Executives in these regions of the world are playing ignorant to these very important issues, but one day they will find out. Let them continue to stick their "BIG HEADS" in the sand and stay in denial or try to cover up moldy work environments. They know exactly what is going on and they continue to try to pass the blame off on the employees who get sick (the ones who are truly the victim). I don't know how they can sleep at nights knowing fully well how their employees suffer or do they even care? The thing is everyone of them are Christians. I wonder what they are going to tell the Lord for all the lies they continue to tell. MOLD EXPOSURE IS NO JOKE!!!! IT KILLS!!!!!
