ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Premier and Minister of National Security Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith yesterday November 10, 2014 confirmed that it is not the Government’s intention to permanently close the West End Police Station but to repair it as soon as it is possible to do so.

He was responding to questions by First District Representative Honourable Andrew A. Fahie during the First Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Second House of Assembly.

Hon Fahie asked, “Madam Speaker, given the ongoing significant increased concerns about crime in the Territory, especially in the First District, would the Premier and Minister of Finance please inform this Honourable House of:

(a)what is the estimated cost to rectify the problems with the West End Police Station Building?

(b)when would the problems with the West End Police Station Building be fully addressed and rectified?

(c)when would the West End Police Station be fully functional and once again accessible to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? and

(d) if there are any plans to permanently close the West End Police Station? If yes, why?”

In response, Premier Smith said the matter of law and order is one that the Government takes very seriously.

“Every effort is being made to ensure that the First District is safe,” he said. He said that the cost to rectify the issues at the West End Police Station is $165,380. Madam Speaker the problems with the West End Police Station will be rectified as soon as it is possible for us to do so,” he said.

“This is an important matter and we expect a tender for this project by December 2014,” he said, adding that the West End Police Station will be able to resume operation and be accessible to the public 24 hours per day, seven days per week once the needed repairs are completed.

“My Government has no plans to permanently close the West End Police Station,” Premier Smith declared.

no police, all the easier for youth to hang out at smugglers cove and burgle the hill side. This is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one. $100,000+ is not too outrageous to this end. restrooms and building at the festival ground cost what? $300K? This should be a priority for the community. Yet NDP continues to woo cruise ships and airlines without fixing home first.
