ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Last Wednesday, May 28, 2014 the bids for the Phase 5 of the power station expansion project of the BVI Electricity Company (BVIEC) were opened.

However it was confirmed that there were two packages on which bids could be placed and only select companies were allowed to bid.

Virgin Islands News Online in a recent interview with Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool was told that Wartsila was the only company allowed to bid for package A.

As this news site understands it, package A for which Wartsila submitted bids had two considerations therein one being a bid of $42.7ML if they are to consider the usage of Diesel engines and the other $38.1ML if they are to consider the option of using propane fuel.

The other bid was for the underground transmission cables that are to be installed between Pockwood Pond and Long Bush. A company by the name of K Line out of Canada was the only bidder for this package and their bids came in for section A 1 $3,845,035 and for section A 2 $3,806,131.

In speaking with this news site Honourable Vanterpool said that they were advised to continue on to Phase 5 with Wartsila as that company had done some initial works with BVIEC. “It’s really connected with a company that does these engines called Wartsila who have done all the engines there so our consultants and advisors told us to stick with that supplier.”

He explained that the group would have had to meet certain criteria that they were asked to. “I think this includes three new engines, if I am correct, building an extra building to house them at the corporation site, it may include more storage for fuel and then it also included other transmission lines that we are going to bring from the corporation…”

“When you call those numbers is likely that they are going to come down because the Corporation is now going to negotiate with the proposed bidder on it.”

Hon Vanterpool said that they are hoping to complete the project sometime in the latter quarter of 2015. “I think it’s a 12 to 18 months project depends on when they start, so from start to finish is going to be about 12 to 18 months.”

Now the truth is coming to light. To proceed with this dubous plan of action Henry's absence was necessary. The next revalation will be who will be the buyer of the corporation. First the Port next the Electricity Corporation.
