ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- There will be no new, temporary or periodic work permits issued in the Virgin Islands until the end of July 2020, Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) has announced.

While addressing members of the public via a Facebook live stream on Sunday, May 3, 2020, Hon Wheatley said this was one of the decisions made by the Cabinet of the Virgin Islands. The Minister stated; however, that new permits will be issued for expatriates living in the Territory and are changing jobs or positions.

“As the public has been made aware, the borders of the Virgin Islands have been closed until June 2020 at which time a phased opening will be initiated to only receive BV Islanders, Belongers and persons holding Certificates of Residence for the BVI,” he said, while stating that Cabinet decided to suspend joint clearance for persons with approved work permits.

Other changes

Minister Wheatley also revealed other changes coming into play.

One other change is in relation to extending clearance for ex-pats who received their immigration clearance before the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said Cabinet agreed to extend the internal policy on issuing clearances, which means Immigration Department and the Department of Labour and Workforce Development can now issue a maximum of two re-issuances of work permit clearances for any person in possession of a valid clearance who was unable to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent airport closures and restrictions on travel.

“This would allow an intended employee to have a total of up to nine months before the work permit becomes invalid,” he revealed.

Of note, the Minister said, persons who are unemployed because of the pandemic can seek jobs. They must; however, apply to the Acting Chief Immigration Officer Mr Ian B. Penn, to get a Conditional Permit under Section 31(1) (c) and 31(1A) of the Immigration and Passport (Amendment) Act, 2016.

No penalties

Hon Wheatley also said there will be no penalties for expats with expired Immigration time and work permits because of the lockdown.

He added too that expats wouldn’t be required to seek an extension from the Immigration Department while their permits are being renewed.

This kind of comment is an insult to our country. It reminds me of a friend in Town saying BVIslanders are the nicest people money can buy. Sadly I think in some cases it is true. Those of us who have kindness in our hearts need to stand up to these self destructive people who blame their failings on others instead of realising the solution is in working together right now, not blaming others.

i dont think the minister or the Premier realize how this virus going to affect the BVI there is no tourism industry at all ,are they aware of how many persons locals and expat. depend on this industry The financial services on the verge of collapsing . The BVI cannot afford to play around with its finances you have to ease the country let the person out of jobs know that they will be given first preference if jobs become available and there employers wish to rehire them in the future ,you are not doing them any good by feeding them words with no light at the tunnel at the same time having home owners with apartments being told that the minister say.some of us would have go back and renegotiate with the banks for a different rate some will go not all so dont be scared. Government talking about stimulus package that should be to help your people keep there homes and apartment that depend on those that have been affected by this virus. We not running anyone but it would be in that person interest to go back home if you stay whatever money you have safe its going get spend the cost of living is higher here verses home where you can stretch you savings until hopefully things might get back.

@ Real Talk...You are wrong. There are a lot of young unemployed Locals who couldn't find work, who will happily take your jobs. Yes, the pay is lower in some cases, but remember, Locals have families with homes or land here where they can live until they get on their feet. Their pay can help their families who cannot get any money from you, so don't think you are irreplaceable, because you are not. Locals first so go home if you want to or shut your ungrateful mouths in our home land. Another thing, if your homeland is so much better that ours, why are you here? Liars!

@ Hodgie; the BVI was built by Expats?????

Are you saying the expats are doing us a favour???? Because it is a fact the all expats are paid in exchange for their skills or labor

        Hodgie !!
you sound like one of those that pays minimum wages to the expat

The territory have have over 100 different nationalities who calls here home and living here for many years

Some expats are paid 35,000.00 per month while some expats are 3.00 per hour. The fact of the matter the expats are compensated(now your forefathers and my forefathers cut that sugar cane and picked that cotton for free back in the day)...so they did Great Britain a huge favour

        Hodgie wake up
eighty nine million dollars per year leaves this territory by a certain sector of the residents

Just as nationals from BVI in other countries working/making a livelihood person choose to be here making a living as well

the BVI remain one of the most peaceful places in this universe so where is this hatred

Hodgi that's not all true back in the days when contractors like mark Simmonds and his brother Owen started it was the local guys that did the construction men like bommi and Heli . I am a local that works in the construction field and because I don't sound like the locals and behave like the locals and work like the locals they say all kinds of things about the locals and I just listen with a smile it's only because they want the dollar that they tolerate us but in truth they don't like us.

Because you don’t hear white people calling down the BVI like its the worse place in the world. If you ask a white person why they like it here, they would answer with kind words although some might not be kind. But when you ask somebody from another caribbean country, everything out their mouth is hatred for the country and their people. And I experience that so much times. One time i went to a Jamaican hairdresser, she said to me I don’t like BVI people or the BVI. I asked her why is she still here then, and i got up and leave. She begged me, literally went on her knees apologizing for me to stay because she know the 300$ i was about to give to her could have helped her. But i said no and i spent my 300$ to a grateful and kind person with a 200$ tip. And i was happy i left and never went back cause them people from the other Caribbean countries have this place like its the worst.

If you spent $300 on your hair and you still have a nasty disposition you need a new hairdresser. Or new morals.

If i work hard for my money, i should be able to spend my money how i want to. And it’s obvious I didn’t mind paying the amount. I would spend 300$ on hair and still pay my friend’s rent which I don’t mind doing either. Because i love helping people when i can. But sometimes you have to spoil yourself. You should try it.

You said you don't hear white people calling down the BVI. Well, that's because they are cunning, most are smarter than the average Joe. Ohhh, they talk bad about locals and call down the country all right. Not because you don't hear them that doesn't mean they don't. You don't know what they talk about when they among their other white friends. Wake up please.. You are loosing your more of your country to the whites than your negro Caribbean brothers and sisters. The Whites just sit back and laugh at all the fighting an the division among us negro people, waiting for us to destroy ourselves and then they sweep in scoop up all the spoils of the war.

@ caribbean Expat only you believe the words you are printing on this blog. It is the white expats that are the economic backbone of BVI; the white expats owns the real estate companies: the white expats own the private villas, the white expats deal with all the yacht charters. The white expats owns the offshore financial companies...The white expats deal with cargo industry. The white expats holds the cards to the tourism sector in our society: most caribbean people are here for their very own economic interest and some have no social interest in the BVI: the caribbean expats gets paid and automatically forwards the payment out of the BVI

The minister will decide, who should remain and who should leave.there are immigration laws in place,we must all accept that the people from the other countries who are here, are not here illegally.

They were granted permission to land though designated ports of entry, and immigration allowed them to remain.
They applied for and get their work permit etc, find a place to reside in an apartments, doing their business.

Everytime a topic comes up with immigration, we are cursing each other on bloggs, and everyday we giving nice smiles on road et when we meet.

we all know who belongs and not belong to the virgin islands, and we show love to each other all the time.
But we here blogging with false and fake words of hate and dislike.that is not true, I say to my uk friends in uk.

People in the BVI, expats and belongers, living together, are the most loving people on earth right now, once again,i say.

[" They SEX-together,they marry together, they live together, and they have children together"] Listen to the surnames of a lot of MRS in high positions in bvi offices etc..Surnames from expat husbands who they are married to in love.

So how you bloggers making it sound like as though we have ethnic hatred in BVI? Its a DAAM LIE! because we all live in harmony and sexamony.

    ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN BLOGGS.
