ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – One resident has come out in stern defiance of the argument that foreign companies should be allowed entry into the local environment and stated that things can be done locally if needed.

“Everything that needs to be done in this country can be done by locals,” the resident argued on the Umoja show on September 26, 2013.

“I remember some time ago somebody was talking about the possibility of having Kentucky Fried Chicken coming to the BVI. Why do we want Kentucky Fried here? What would happen to our Scato's?” he asked.

“When these guys [large companies] come here and they make their ton load of money, that’s not going to be spent in our community, that’s gone money,” the resident said.

He stated, “You cannot bring a Home Depot into our community and expect that when Home Depot makes their money it will circulate like Clarence Thomas, it’s not going to happen.”

The resident added, when giant companies are brought in, it signals destruction for every Virgin Islander.

“I don’t know when we will get the message,” he said while stating that there are some out there who would argue, ‘Oh, let Home Depot come, Oh let Kentucky Fried [Chicken] come’.

“What are you talking about my friend, do you understand what you’re talking about; if you understand what you’re talking about you won’t say that.”

He continued that the territory could not afford to allow these ‘massive companies’ to come to the Territory.

Co-host of the programme Natalio Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru said he loved it when brothers and sisters who may not have their ancestry or roots here become patriots and come out in defence of the territory.

“What some people don’t realise sometimes is that some of the policies that we’re here defending, when you become a part officially, these will protect you and they will protect your children, so don’t fight against it,” he said.

We all like KFC but let it stay abroad. We are a small island with a small population and KFC would put everyone doing the same thing here out of business. It is not worth our economy and employment to drop just for chicken. Wise up! What is good for big countries is not good for us.

I have a question. Me as a local person bring a kfc here, isn't it my business and the people that work there are locals? I think am only paying for the recipe. correct me if i'm wrong

Yes Vince the business is a franchise which the owner here would psy a percentage of their takings to "KFC" they would employ local people. However before this argument was even aired the situation is this. A population base of 20,000+ would have to live in Road Town before any franchise would even consider opening, they arfe nearly there but not quite yet. Give it a couple of years and if the population keeps growing in Road Town then you vet well might see one as the overseas franchise law will be like every other law written in the protection of the Virgin Islands"IGNORED"

It is not that we want KFC or any other US base franchise in the BVI; but we need to realize that competition makes us improve. I like Scato but for me it is in need of another and complete makeover. From the kitchen to the veranda needs a facelift. Even if it is a new local in the market, people are looking to see new things and establish liming spots. To remain on the cutting edge in marketing and customer loyalty we need competition to drive innovation.

I don't see a problem bringing them here, why r you guys afraid of competition? you guys don't want to step up your service and quality of food so the easiest thing to say that they will kill local. that's so far from the truth. no big company can take customers, once you give good service and prices for their money.
I m sure if KFC come here, they will employ a lot more staff than Scotto's and pay better wages.

they might as well let Kentucky Fried chicken and Home depot come here what is the difference, you go by scato's and by Clarence Thomas how many local do you see employed at these establishments, would that be the same as having they American franchises come here the money is still leaving the country regardless, but to these people who do not want the american franchises here,Who's money are we spending.think people do the maths.

If the local business owners would just step up on customer service as well as quality food there would be no need to bring KFC or any other outside companies. Every time BVI landers go rock they come back with a bucket of KFC I wonder Y? I never see a st thomian go back at Thomas with a bucket of scatos. Bring on the competition. All govt got to do is lease them a building. Plus is us locals would be working there anyways. More jobs same way.

I just want to know what are some of the policies that preventing the franchise to come to Tortola. I am not afraid of KFC, if the come they will provide job, the people on the boat will buy chicken , the people on the land will buy chicken. Some of Tortola will get fat and more health problem will happen. I don't eat chicken often but when I do I go SCATO. However we need to understand that there is a lot to consider when allowing franchise to come to Tortola , consider this do you think if Home Depot come to Tortola it would sell a drill for 250,common sense would tell me that it would level the market, or come close to the price of CTL , its more money for them. Well Common sense not so common anymore. But I love me some SCATO Chicken, whenever I can get it. Somebody ship some to England for me.

I dont agree with someone who wrote earlier that brnging KFC or Home Depot will cause our economy to drop. First of all, for one of these companies to come here it means that someone bought the franchise all government has to do is ensure these franchise are owned by locals. These large corporations will definitely help to decrease the unemployment rate, government will benfit from the taxes paid. Visitors to our country will identify with these names and therefore patronise. Many of these corporations are already in the Caribbean perhaps the government can do a study and see what these countries say about their economy since letter them in. We need to stop being so small minded, think outside the box for the future good of our country.

What are people in this territory afraid of? Competition? Man come on, competition is healthy, and it is a necessary tool to improve services and prices. Scatos is in business longer than I been on this earth, and they don't see it fit to improve the place to make their customers comfortable. I refuse to take my family to Scatos to sit and eat. Now, the Home Depot issue. I went go a local hardware to buy a French window, and the price was $350. I went to Home Depot in St. Thomas and the same window was $104. Nuff said. St. Thomas is a nice 40 minutes boat ride, so I will pay my $10 departure tax, my $45 boat fare and go to Home Depot, and to KFC for my bucket of KFC. The business people here want to be a monopoly so that they can push any thing down people throats. Scato chicken too expensive, the place needs a make over, and the hardware stores don't carry a variety, and what they carry you need a bank loan to buy. People stop living in the dark ages, nothing is wrong with Change, and nothing is wrong with Competition.

I think we should spread the greed around. Why shouldn't we have KFC. A Tolian would own it, no?? We sick of high priced dried up chicken. Dem no cook it like Sanders does! Money iz gonna stay here too. Cost to clear the products through customs, monies gonna go to BVI electric to run the A/C and the big fryers, monies gonna go to peebles hospital to unplug our arteries, so there u go. Problem solved, I vote bring KFC in. It will also make other chicken places do a better job in cooking and prepping their chicken. They wont overcook it, or they will loose their customers. Oh as far as Home Depot, bring that in too. CTL is way high priced. $980 Makita miter saw, is $498.00 at the Homie Depot. Is it really keeping the $$$ here that you are all worried about, or losing out on a strangle hold of your fellow countrymans wallets? Be honest now! God's listening
