No increment, small incentives being pulled – Peebles Hospital staff

Employees at the New Peebles hospital says they love the new facility but they are unhappy about the way they are treated by management especially in the area of incentives as employees. Photo: VINO
However, on the issue of then paying what their insurance does not cover, Bishop Cline said, “In terms of the deductable, the co-pay that what they term it, for insurance, the only time that the employee was not expected to pay the co-pay was when we had Atlantic Southern as an Insurer, they did not require a deductable…. When we switch to BUPA and Nagicare they have a deductable and that was communicated to the employees, that it is not BVIHSA requiring them to pay deductable, it’s really the insurance company.” Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Staff of the new and old Peebles Hospital have been pulling the blanket from over their faces to uncover their discomfort and unhappiness with what they described as ‘heartless management’ at the health care facility.

Top of the list for the un-happiness said one staff is the fact that they have been very committed to seeing the new hospital meet the expected standards of the Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton, Chairman of the BVI Health Services Authority Bishop John I. Cline, other line mangers and the general public. “But no one seems to want to meet us quarter way, I can’t say halfway as much, just quarter way and we are here and we are unhappy. If you have a staff force that is unhappy then management should be very concerned, very concerned especially in a hospital,” said another staff.

This issue of their unhappiness became overbearing as word got around from a recent senior management level meeting that at the break of this New Year 2015 some fringe benefits that staff once enjoyed will be cut off.

“As we understand, let’s say for example we visit a doctor here and present our insurance card and it takes care of 80% of our bill the government use to absorb and pay the other 20% for us now that is what is cutting out. We were reliably informed that is what was discussed and decided upon at a management meeting and that is not right, we working here and we should get some sort of incentive,” said one staff member.

The other issue they said that shows an uncaring side of the management style at the hospital is the fact that persons coming off the streets and staff members are paying the same cost for food at the new cafeteria at the new hospital.

“That is gross, not even a 10% or 5% off for your staff, why they have to be so heavy handed with us here. This is not good, you doing everything in your power to keep your staff unhappy rather than make them comfortable so they can give you a 110% service to help Peebles raise its rating, NO they got their own infighting and strangling us the ground level workers in the process, bull,” said one.

“Putting the icing on the cake is the fact that they owing us, where is our increment that they due us for so long, where is our increments? If we aren’t getting no increment we not paying a cent for medical services other than what we paying through our insurance and despite the food here is very good we will go elsewhere and shop our food, the bakery right round the corner and they cheaper we’ll go, the Chinese, we’ll go where ever and we not promoting the hospital. Let people think and do as they so please, we not promoting anything for this hospital that’s what you get from unhappy staff.”

Contacted about the concerns of the unhappy staff, the Chairman Bishop John I. Cline said that forthwith he is going to intervene as it relates to the incentive for staff at the canteen at the hospital as he feels that much can be done for workers.

When we switch to BUPA and Nagicare they have a deductable and that was communicated to the employees, that it is not BVIHSA requiring them to pay deductable, it’s really the insurance company.”

“That was done over three years ago under the last administration when they when they switched to BUPA so it has nothing to do with anything that HSA has instituted to say that we use to pay and now we don’t, it was the insurance company that didn’t require that,” said Bishop Cline.

Asked specifically if the claims of the alleged new system that the staff says will take place at the beginning of this year, he said, “No that’s not accurate.”

BVIHSA: "We need to raise fees in line with market rates in order to pay our bills including staff and other resources"

BVI PEOPLE: "These people want to kill us! NDP is not for the small man. All that money we have to pay that is not fair!"

BVIHSA Workers:" It's a shame we can't get our increments or other incentives from BVIHSA"

BVI PEOPLE: "Here we go again, NDP taking advantage of the poor local people, when will it end!"

This is hilarious! The same people that don't want to pay fees to enable HSA to in turn run the facilities and pay people, will be the first to complain about them not getting paid.

This is still a democracy. And in a democracy those who bother to show up and vote determine who will represent them as voting members of government.

As a hospital staff I done see that even health care has become political despite a new building. Managers and Chairman all are major NDP supporters. They worship the Minister & the NDP. They do all their dirty works & you have to be careful how you deal with these injustices because you will be victimized. We have no help.

What really needs to be addressed is the quality of Patient Care being given at Peebles Hospital. If the same Staff Members that are failing to apply Medical Ethics and Standards in their delivery of healthcare are the ones making noise about increment, they don't deserve nothing but being held accountable for the lost of lives, due to their poor and inadequate services.

Thank you .It is nice to have a new Hospital but if you don't have qualified and experience people that knew there work every thing still remain the same. When Mr Andrew from vip came out ant tell them about what going on in the Hospital some top ndp members was p1$$ off with him they don't want to here the truth. IT have some experience workers who knew there work but it have some that just feeling there way around and they needs to find out who they are. The Hospital needs to be exploit on some of those talk shows. At the right time I will come out very bad experience who know about Peebles knew what I'am talking about so many years of madness that needs to be fix.

Too much conflict of interest is impeding the progress that should be made in health care. Even the Chair without the true tender process has benefited tremendously. This is wrong but only the same culprits are the ones you can report to so you know nothing will be looked into.

Not quite true though Mr Chairman. Under the old healthcare ordinance and even up to the authority act, Healthcare workers used to be given service free. We understand that increasing revenue is a priority but since you can recoup 80% from the insurance please consider absorbing the 20%. It will go a long way in improving staff satisfaction. Caring trickles down. If administrators and leaders cannot demonstrate caring, is it fair to expect that the employees do?

There is no reason why the people will ever return the National Democratic Party to power as after four years they have not done anything or touch on the real issues:

    Where is there promised of
    • A higher minimum wage

    • Properly funded schools (Can you believe our public school teachers have to pass the hat for basic supplies?)

    • Truly universal health care (public option, anyone?)

    • Tax fairness such as ending the appalling giveaway to businesses and nothing is pass down to we the consumers

    • Ending the ridiculously irrational "war on drugs" and its prison-industrial-complex twin monstrosity

where is the Gun legislation as our children dies in the streets

And oh the corruption and conflict of interest
    • lmao (06/01/2015, 09:21) Like (3) Dislike (0) Reply

Who will be elected to replace them? Do you think you can just raise minimum wage just like that? NHI is Universal Healthcare and BVI does not have the population for the public option you speak of. You all watch too much @#$%% CNN and FoxNews then trying to apply every piece of bull#$%% to the tiny BVI. The only thing I agree with you on is the stupid war on drugs. The parents are the ones responsible for their kids being animals from a young age, not Government.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and without vision the people will perish and that is exactly what's happening because the lack of not poor but NO vision. Staff are victimized, disgruntled, and unhappy because of BAD & IMPROPER management, leadership, and incompetence of the vain and subhuman people who hold these positions. The whole management system needs restructuring and to be revamped. Leaders are people whom people follow, admire, who are role models, people who guides directs & have the ENTIRE ORGANIZATION @ heart no matter the nature, stature, nationality or creed, not people who are misguided and have no direction because of FAMILY, FRIENDS & GOSSIPERS. Key elements leaders should have with education & intelligence is dealing with criticisms, wisdom, the ability to act and LISTENS with humility and be passionate which they show NONE unless it's sum 1 who kisses the backs! I agree wholeheartedly with the person/s who get their satisfaction by supporting and patronizing other food establishments since staff cannot get OVERDUED INCREMENTS. "You cannot be a leader and ask other people to follow you, unless you know how to follow, too" Sam Rayburn. If a man calls himself a man of God he should read 1 Timothy 6:9, Psalm 10:3, Proverbs 20:21 then he will see where and how ALL fit into that equation.

I know there will be many back lashes to what I have to say but I don't care. I am a civil servant, and I take exception to the fact that all civil servants talk about is their increment. In my department 80% of them come to work late. About half hour of their arrival, they have to step out. They are rude and lazy. When they are asked to do something that is their job anyway, it becomes a problem. Many of them don't deserve the pay check they are receiving. Government need to shed the weight of NON-PERFORMING Public Servants.

Strups. All u people out there just talk because u can, but none of you knows the half of what is endured at BVIHSA. NONE. See all. Them women in the top seats. Woo unto the workers. Trust me, its a slave camp in that frigging place. I see staff on the job working with chikungunya because they afraid to report sick. Now you who reading this knows the pains that thing come with. Do I need to say anymore? That virgin gorda woman is a b-itch. Kunta kinte probably turning in his grave every time she sets foot in that place. SLAVE DRIVER. The spread mouth and the ghetto diva hmm. Well I know you tired reading about them. When they make up their minds nobody and I mean nobody could tell them do differently. Peebles staff ain't had a raise since we left the damn plantation.we ain't had an increment review n nearly ten damn years. So regardless of what you out there have to say we have needs. And those needs comes in the form of bills. The last meeting we had it was said that the minister stated that he made sure the funds were there for us to get our increment. When you guys at bvi govt ranted about not getting yours last year we knew how you felt, yet here you are bashing us because we now opening our mouths.you made noise for yours and got it. We said if even half of ours we would've been grateful. Every day its something new addedto your portfolio and nothing new added to the salary. BS.tell me also why we have to pay insurance. We in the forefront for every airborne, skin borne, foot borne, and talk borne disease there is. Yet, we pay insurance. Look at the Ebola scare. If one of us contracted that WHAT!! Would they (the big ones make sure we are taken care of?). HELL NO. Fire, immigration, police, customsand the likes don't pay it. Whose job is more dangerous? We are unfaired in the BVIHSA. They basically state what they wanted annum and gets it and we get the crumbs. PEOPLE, say why you want you don't know the whole. You can talk all you want About our service because you are the real ungrateful ones. Just be honest and talk about the treatment you get when you go abroad.the TRUTH THAT IS
