DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - The New Life Baptist Church (NLBC) will join the rest of the Territory in marking the 60th anniversary of Festival by hosting an ‘Ole Skool’ event on the second floor of the Save the Seed Energy Centre basketball court building, Duff’s Bottom, tomorrow evening July 25, 2014.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online today July 24, 2014, Bishop of the New Line Baptist Church John I. Cline said, “As a church, we have decided to join the celebrations in this particular way by having a celebration of dance. It will be a combination of dance, fashion shows and different activities [tomorrow] night.”

“So we have called it the 60s ‘Ole Skool’ party, but the idea behind it is being in solidarity with our nation in remembering the painful history of our forefathers…the lives that were lost, the sacrifices that were made, and because they stood up for us, we can stand today,” said Bishop Cline.

“We do not stand with our heads bowed because we have managed to, I believe, fulfil their dream for us, that we would live in a free, peaceful and safe society that is prosperous. And I believe all those things they have died for. So we come together not only for thanksgiving to God, but in celebration and in solidarity with our nation,” he said.

“If you look throughout the Bible you will see where the Jewish people celebrated their deliverance, whether it was the Passover, whether it was Yum Kippur, whether it was Rosh Hashanah. They are a people who remember their past…and I believe that as a people we have not done well in remembering our past and I believe it is incumbent upon us, not only the Government but the churches and every aspect of society to be reminded that we didn’t just get here by ourselves but that we stand on shoulders of blood, sweat, tears, sacrifice and death. So we celebrate,” he said.

The event starts at 7:00 pm and tickets (available at the Save the Seed Energy Centre) are $10 before the event and $12 at the door. There will be prizes for best 60s costume, most outrageous 60s footwear and there will also be a singalong karaoke contest. Food and drinks will be on sale.

    1 John 2 vs 15-17

"Don't love the world or the things in the world........"

The church must raise up a standard. You can't follow the trends of the sinful world. How are we going to draw men to Christ with this unholy living?

Lets see Jesus in John 2:1-25 turned water into wine.... (celebration at a wedding (social event)) do you attend weddings? Maybe you are turned off by the songs they play...
Then there's 2 Samuel 6:14 David danced (lets hope no one dances out there clothes) (another celebration).
The point is Christians can have fun too its Emancipation for goodness sake and they decided to have a party in a clean fun environment, shucks, I swear sometimes these people who blog these one pointers live in a BOX.
I will be there with bells on and guess what I am a Christian

The event on Friday serves two purposes. We are celebrating our emancipation and it is a fundraiser for Africa. John Cline is not a greedy person, business man, yes but he does no try to extort money from people. New Life then cannot be that kind of church because their leader is not like that. New Life is doing a lot for a little slum area in Nairobi Kenya at the moment. A school there that is being built by the Church now affords over 200 African children the opportunity of an education. I wish that we could stop being so quick to judge others before we understand the purpose of their actions. The Africa delegation just returned from Africa where members of the BVI community including contractors built the slab for the high school. It is truly a heart warming vision and more of the BVI should support this cause.

it is outrageous that these groups don't pay taxes. Religion is a business and should be taxed. Religion is also issuing false hope and should be sued - only problem is nothing about religion can be proved, not even the existence of their so called dope smoking big man in the sky.
  • New Life would be tax exempt (25/07/2014, 09:33) Like (4) Dislike (15) Reply
Whether they paid taxes or not is irrelevant as New Life would get so many tax returns (for all the good it does) it wouldn't make sense. You are very ignorant of the works of that church to make that statement. Further you are a very lost person to make you expose your final problem. May God have mercy on your soul.

@ Agree Any church organization is tax exempt anywhere in the world so research your facts before you come on here chatting nonsense. You gonna need to call on that same dope smoking big man in the sky.

Lol @ these comments. People can be really ridiculous. So I guess Christians are not allowed to dress up; dance or participate in fundraising activities. Please show me the passage/s in your bible that says these things. What is so unholy about putting on a costume and dancing to some music? Amazing.

I guess only the real pimps, the sex and the booze were missing (or did you have that too) - a big people event don't have trashy. When you give your life to Christ the old things are past away and all things become new. Stop lusting for that kinda life. Not arguing with you, but eternity will tell the story for us all.

Remember charity begins at home John. I have no problem with helping Africa, but do it for the right reason. Too many pastors are using the church for self gratification. Remember when Jesus was on earth he was not seeking rewards he was helping without shouting.
