New look Panthers send out early warning signals!
New boy, Nigel Sanderson was the star for the Panthers with a hat trick on his league debut.
At the scheduled kick off, the Haitian Stars only had four players ready to play and the game which didn’t get started until after 5 p.m. at which time the Stars had mustered the bare 7 to allow the game to go ahead.
Seemingly, in an effort to make up for lost time the Panthers attacked with such veracity that it took just 8 minutes for Shannon Lawrence to open the scoring. Lawrence slotted home after Giddon Prince, Sanderson, Junior Heyliger and Jeremy Frederick had all had chances to open the scoring.
The Stars’ defense was breached again on 13 minutes when Heyliger headed home.Six minutes later, Sanderson flung himself forward like an exocet missile at the edge of the box to get on the end of a Prince cross to head home the 3rd.
“I was far from the play and when I realized what was happening I sprinted from the half way line, I run, I run and as it cross came over I watched it all the way and flew in the air for it and I headed right into the bottom corner,” commented Sanderson.
Surprisingly, the Stars then held onto to reach half time without conceding again and as re-enforcements kept arriving and must have felt they had a chance to get back into the game. James Felix and James St Anne in particular were looking pacey and dangerous as the half drew to a close.
However, it took the Panthers less than 60 seconds from the re-start to score their fourth. Lawrence on hand again as some loose passing across the back left the ‘Keeper, Claude St Anne, stranded on the 6 yard line and Lawrence a simple tap in.
Another 60 seconds and it was five as Howard Johnson fired home.
On 66 minutes, James St. Anne had the small crowd on their feet as he popped up at the far post, caused confusion through the heart of the Panthers defense and left Erron Ewers with nothing to do but pick the ball out of the net. The goal scarcely a consolation for what was to follow.
Normalcy was returned in the 69th minute when Sanderson fired home a cracking volley from the edge of the 18 yard box for his second and the Panthers sixth.Six became seven and then eight as Stenneth Williams scored a quick fire brace in the 71st and 73rd minute.
The Panthers were to score three more in the final 7 minutes to make it 11-1. First Craig Roberts popped up unmarked to drive the ball home, then Johnson scored his second and Sanderson rose above the keeper to score a thoroughly deserved hat trick.
Sanderson though was quick to praise his team mates. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates they helped me, they passed to me I just had to finish them off for the victory.”
