New Digicel BVI GM Kevin R. Gordon focusing on staff development
Virgin Islands News Online, in an exclusive interview, sought out the new General Manager to find out what plans he has in store and what he has been up to since his post became official on November 11, 2016.
According to Jamaica national Mr Gordon, he is no stranger to the telecommunications sector, with 24 years and counting. He started as a Technician, then rose through the ranks of Engineer, Junior Executive, Middle Executive, Senior Executive and now the General Manager of Digicel BVI.
Fresh at the helm after being promoted from the position of Head of Business Operations, Mr Gordon has already promoted three persons and has restructured the company to ensure persons are placed in a position where they are best suited.
Training
“If we are going to take this business to the next level, training is paramount and we sought to address this quickly in specific areas,” he said.
Mr Gordon sought the services of a trainer to get 61 per cent of his staff trained in International Service Management – ITIL V3, and out of that amount 15 percent have gone on to be certified.
“We recognise that if we are going to grow our staff must be our greatest assets. My job as General Manager is to ensure that every person that works in Digicel BVI fulfills their potential and if you don’t know what that is we will help to guide you and shape you to ensure that you can grow in our business. We don’t want persons remaining in the same positions, year in, year out without any growth so we are going to provide and have done so, the opportunities for all staff to grow in the business, to excel, to reach their full potential.”
The new GM mentioned that it is important for him to find persons from within the organisation and, once they are equipped with the skills set, they will be promoted.
“We have the best team I have seen across any market. I have been given all the support, I cannot ask for more. We have had very good conversations since I have started, and we will continue to have those conversations. I love my team and I would not trade them for the world.”
Game Changer
Meantime, customers of that telecommunications service can expect to experience the LTE ‘Game Changer’ before Christmas.
“We are not launching LTE, what we are launching is a Game Changer,” he noted, explaining that the LTE spectrum has been given to them as operators and a number of advancements have been made with the product. “What we are doing is a solution that touches every home, every business, everyone, everywhere.”
When asked about how he felt being at the very top of the company close to 12 years after he joined, Mr Gordon said: “I’m excited but humbled, hopeful but remain in prayer and planning, always looking out for opportunities to create new paths that lead us to Bigger and Better things.”
Challenges
While admitting that it is nothing unique to Digicel, the introduction of the latest technology to the communications sector has caused an overall decline in revenue from the cost of calls.
“The revenues across all operators, across all markets, voice revenues have declined. Especially for the mature markets, those revenues will continue to fall, what we need to do is adapt and adapt quickly. And this business continues to innovate quickly and LTE is just part of that innovation and we will offer that to our customers to ensure that whatever methods they choose to make those calls, we will provide them with the vehicle, with the tools to do so,” Mr Gordon said, noting too that he was not in a position to disclose the actual figures reflecting the revenue drop for the VI market.
