ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The controversial appointment of fired Trinidad and Tobago Health professional Mrs Paula G. Chester-Cumberbatch as the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is proceeding.

Mrs Chester-Cumberbatch arrived in the Virgin Islands on October 12, 2016 and is to start her new job assignment in the coming days.

The appointment caused cries of discrimination against locals when there was in fact a local applicant Dr Ronald E. Georges who was also qualified. Dr Georges acted in the post before and was one of the finalists, according to our newsroom’s National Democratic Party sources close to the process.

No room for locals

Mrs Chester-Cumberbatch will replace another non-national, outgoing CEO Mrs Darlene A. Carty-Baptiste, who has now landed a new job in the Ministry of Health and Social Development as a consultant on Medical Tourism.

Around 2011 the new incoming BVIHSA boss was fired as Chief Executive Officer of the South West Regional Health Authority in Trinidad for not issuing suspension letters to medical professionals under investigation in the death of a young mother.

However, both the Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Ronnie W. Skelton- an At Large Member- and Chairman of the BVIHSA Board, Bishop John I. Cline, have defended the controversial appointment, claiming she was the most qualified.

While here Mrs Chester-Cumberbatch is getting familiar with Health Services senior staff, dealing with immigration and labour requirements and apartment hunting.

Her education includes: Howard University Class of 1993, MBA,  Heath Services Administration, Washington, District of Columbia,  Howard University Class of 1991, Marketing,  Washington, District of Columbia and St Joseph's Convent Class of 1979,  Bhubaneswar, India.

Fired for standing by her employees and not buckling to the Board? You all mad at that? I see a few local options who sure as hell will send your black azz packing for next to nothing.

Board said they were going in a different direction and the insubordination had nothing to do with it. I hope she able with the foolishness that goes on here i.e. nepotism, favouritism, incompetence etc

VIP was a waste of time. They dumb. They never understood people voted them in because they want change. VIP change nothing NDP did what we didn't like. We wanted the Board desolve done with and return to the Ministry. So all our problems are because of an incompetent VIP we voted in power in 2007... That's why we had to vote them out and put back NDP...VIP never understood people change for change. This board and chair need to go and return to the Ministry.

The authority was an initiative of the Ndp. I do agree with you though, eleven years and all BVIHSA has managed to do is drive the health system deeper in debt. For one thing it is too top heavy. Everyone wants to be a manager, get paid big bucks, and over work and under pay those who rep the back bone of it. I have said it, and continue to believe that the ministry should dismantle it and try another approach.
