ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- It appears that new rules imposed by the Director of Public Prosecutions Kim Hollis QC, to have all sex offence cases tried in camera, is in effect practicing media censorship.

It was on April 24, 2017 that Nelson Callwood aka ‘Pumpkin’ was sentenced by the High Court.

Mr Callwood was accused of sexual offences with an adult and will serve 9 years for buggery and 4 years for indecent assault. The sentences will run concurrently and was handed down by Justice Nicola P. Byer.

Benjamin out

In addition, Mr Danny Benjamin who was found guilty a few years ago for chopping a young man from the western side of the island appealed to the High Court to have his 10 year sentence reduced.

Mr Benjamin won the appeal and was given a re-trial and is now sentenced to 18 months for each charge, to run concurrently; however, the 18 month sentence is suspended for 2 years; therefore, Mr Benjamin will spend no more time at Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut.

His suspended sentence was handed down on April 24, 2017 by Justice Byer.

That is no media censorship. It is the right and proper thing to do especially when your children is involve. All sexual cases should have been tried years ago in camera, after all the victim still have to face society.

@qc It is people like u who wants to keep the BVI in the dark age. It is the modern thing to do. It seem as if you are only locked in to "Village news" Do some research or read a book if you can. The QC is doing what modern countries are doing.
