ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI -Efforts to make Brewers Bay and surrounding communities safe from crime and vandalism are now in high speed as signs are now in placed to let visitors and community members know that the residents are on the watch for would-be criminals.

A Neighbourhood Crime Watch was established just under a year ago through the efforts of the Brewer’s Bay Action Committee (BBAC), a community based, organization dedicated to preserving the wholesome character of our community and providing a safe, healthy and beautiful environment to raise children and families says Chairman of the Neighbourhood Watch Group Mr. Geoffrey Brooks.

Over the Easter weekend neighbourhood watch signs were erected at both entrances to Brewers Bay and additional signs will be erected throughout the community. In addition, the committee plans to lobby for additional lighting, cameras and other surveillance devices to identify criminals who enter the area.  As summer approaches our Community Crime Watch will continue to be vigilant in our work to preserve the safe environment of Brewer’s Bay and the surrounding neighbourhood and we invite all members of the community to join in this endeavour,” he said.

According to the President of the Brewers Bay Action Committee Mr. Claude Rymer, the Neighbourhood Watch Group has been in the making for some time now. “We have the Chairman of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee Mr. Geoffrey Brooks who reports to BBAC on plans and actions taken by the committee and projects which need funding.

What prompted the group to form this neighbourhood watch?  Mr. Rymer states, “the days when you could leave a window in their home open, drive to town and return and meet your home intact are no more. We have had our share of criminal activities especially burglaries and we say enough is enough. We now have eyes all over and we would be reporting all suspicious activities to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force. We want to restore peace and security to all the residence, visitors of Brewers Bay and surrounding villages.

“The Acting Commissioner of Police along with senior ranks of the Force attended meetings organised BBAC to discuss community policing and to assist in the formation of the neighbourhood watch group. They were able to show us how we could help to fight crime within our neighbourhoods.” We would like to extend a special thank you to the Ag. Commissioner of Police and his team for their support.
