‘NDP plugging renewable energy as economic pillar’ - Creque

"We all clearly remember those months after Irma… The availability of energy affects us all tremendously. Likewise, not just the availability, but the price of energy tremendously affects our entire society,” Mr Creque said while noting that when oil prices increase in the future, every business and resident will feel the overwhelming pressure of that squeeze. HUNTUMS GHUT, Tortola, VI - As fuel prices surge and the Virgin Islands (VI) continue to be 100% dependent on energy for commercial and domestic purposes, the territory should take a proactive look at more alternative and renewable energy sources.

This is according to National Democratic Party’s (NDP 1) Territorial At-Large Candidate, Mr Henry O. Creque, who was at the time addressing residents at the official launch of NDP’s District Five Candidate, Elvis J. Harrigan aka “Juggy” last night January 31, 2019, in the Huntums Ghut community.

Too dependent on oil – Creque

According to Mr Creque, it is not the first time he highlighted the issue, “Two weeks ago I spoke about the high cost of energy and the importance of the BVI looking at alternatives. When you do the math, you realize that the British Virgin Islands is one of the most oil-dependent countries in the world,” he said.

“We all clearly remember those months after Irma… The availability of energy affects us all tremendously. Likewise, not just the availability, but the price of energy tremendously affects our entire society,” Mr Creque said while noting that when oil prices increase in the future, every business and resident will 'feel the overwhelming pressure of that squeeze'.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the time to act is now. Now that prices are moderate. If we wait until prices go sky-high again, too late will be our cry.  BVI, it is time to raise our anchors up, and move to a new day in energy production, a new day with greater use of renewable energy,” he urged.

Fourth Pillar

He said that the territory is emerging as a “New BVI” as the economy is diversifying organically and in addition to the Tourism and Financial services industries, the territory is growing its construction industry especially in the aftermath of the 2017 hurricanes.

“And this National Democratic Party will develop renewable energy as our fourth pillar.  Four critical pillars along with Agriculture and Fishing which are essential to our very being,” he said while discussing more plans and promises to come under a Hon. Myron V. Walwyn led NDP Government.

All these issues and plans these potentials and politicians been talking about for the past 16 yrs. We get nothing . They get elected they engaged in self interest and bad spending . They become almost loyal mobs to each other..
My two favorit polticians this time around are Shareen and Vincent . They will not encourage wrong. They will speak out . They will represent the people . They are not money greedy people . They genuinely care and want to make a difference . They cannot be bought ...We must be sure they get in

What do you mean renewal energy as an economic pillar? Are you suggesting that we sell energy to neighbouring nations?

No doubt reducing fossil fuel and increasing renewable energy, ie, wind, wave, thermal, solar.....etc would lower individual, commercial, industrial and business cost and enhance energy security. What talking about alternatively energy use and developing the industry are two diffrent things. Talking about developing alternative energy is nice sounding poetry. But where is the beef? What is the former Deputy Manager of BVIEC plan on doing to make renewable energy the third economic pillar? How many jobs will be created? What will be the average wage? Will the territory export energy?

Common sense aint so common. I suggest that you research what is renewable energy and se what profit it brings to a country and how much cost its cut on not been reliable on oil and gas.

Henry is good people and hopefully bring a difference: lots of we stuck in political party mode: the “party” is not the problem(it is the people within a given party)....politics is a very good thing(but it’s the politicans you have to keep your eyes on)we had very good politicans in the 60s; 70s, 80s, 90s
