NDP not delivering as promised – Mr McLloyd Walters

- Said gaps created because of too much self-interests in governments; VIP lost their way
Mr McLloyd Walters was analytically critical of both the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) and National Democratic Party (NDP) on the television show, Vigilate Dialogue with Shaina M. Smith last night, December 12, 2013 noting that the NDP is failing to deliver as promised while the VIP has lost its way. Photo: VINO

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – One man has taken the bold liberty of using his democratic right of freedom of speech and a right to an opinion to boldly declare that the National Democratic Party (NDP) Government of the day has betrayed its electorates by not delivering as promised.

Mr Walters, a local contractor, was a fearless liberal guest on ‘The Vigilate Dialogue with Shaina M. Smith’ aired last night, Thursday December 12, 2013 on CBN Channel 51. The TV show guest, prompted by the host Ms Smith, was very analytical for both the NDP and the VIP and the workings of governments and politics, speaking to what he sees as the root causes for their failures.

In reviewing the main and only two parties visible in the VI today, NDP and VIP, Mr Walters opined that it is the view of the majority that both parties are not doing enough in the interest of the country. “The Virgin Islands Party has brought the British Virgin Islands up to a certain point…The case of NDP party, they started out with a good agenda, they said it’s time for a change and most people agreed, it certainly a time for a change. Because the other party, they seem not to be responding to our needs or to the needs of the larger population,” said Mr Walters.

But he noted that while looking even today at the written agenda of the NDP it is one that can be described as a great one. “It says a lot of nice things but I believe the reality of what is promised and what is delivered they are not in alignment. There is a credibility gap in terms of what is promised and what our expectations are.”

According to Mr Walters, the Virgin Islands Party has not responded to the changing condition and the changing demands of the electorates. Some of the shortcomings of the VIP as highlighted by the talk show guest were its inability to respond to the youth population and those of re-migrants. “It seems even so today, the VIP has not found a way in which to respond within the party and to respond to the realities.”

“….The issues to the working class and the middle class person in the community, we often find that those issues are not being addressed.” To justify this, he cited the example of the sorry state of the East End community which he side is in a state of ‘sorry neglect’ when compared to other communities across the territory. “You find that there are so much inequalities in societies,” he said.

Finding ways and strategies to ensure and get governments to work in the interest of the working middle and lower class people of the territory have been highlighted as one of the fundamental problems that exist today. “If we look at the political situation in the BVI today, I think that a fair majority of persons have the feeling that the political system, the politics, is not quite working in the interest of the majority of persons in the community,” said Mr Walters.

I missed this show but I certainly agree with the statements made by the fearless liberal Mr. Walters.

I believe the NDP needs to bridge the gap immediately and if not they will be a one term government and I believe that VIP needs to find its way and if not they will retain the opposition. Nuff said.

The mash of this country has not just happended now. The past 4 administrations each have a hand in what mess we are in! To fix the 16 years of mess will take at least 8 to 12 years of precision focus along with streamlined efficiency and productivity of the civil service. Furthermore, the PEOPLE of the BVI have to be an integral part of steering this wayward VI ship by being more giving than taking to ones' country! Hopefully we can get a more effective captain and crew to run the VI ship; time will tell! NDP and VIP have no vision at this time!

This man wants to contest Elections and should get on with it. This stems from the issue with the road up East End and that's my problem with this place. People only see what's wrong when something hits them personally. Things can be going wrong all the time but they act blind because they're doing good themselves. When it hits home then all of a sudden they become National Icons and heroes looking out for the BVI. Take a hike dude, nobody wants to hear this. The people who all of a sudden realize BVI is in trouble, where were they 4,5,6yrs ago when worst was happening? I can't take these people serious.

I think what we need is for who ever in power to face one project at a time complete it and go from there .what people don't like is to many projects on hand and none cant get started plus time running out soon time for election that spell on finish projects so if you going to do then lets get it on.

My hope is that the progressive people of this country will stand up and be counted. I commend those that can rise above the politics and I am simply asking the others to put the politics aside long enough to have an honest conversation about the issues that are keeping us all as a country from reaching our true potential. I have been involved in construction, but I am not out there in competition with other local contractors for government work, I am an Engineer by profession. I come from a family of civil servants so there isn't anyone out there that have to tell me about public service or question my committment to public service !
